Solomon Principal Newsletter: April 13, 2018
Dear Parents and Community,

I'm thrilled to announce that through your efforts, our Solomon Soiree committee has raised $9616.71 as of today. 110 attendees at the event last Friday, as well as dozens of raffle ticket buyers, helped to make that happen so far. I am confident we will be able to get this number well above $10,000--we still have slots available for our Student Lock-In on the evening of May 11. I sent an email out via Sign Up Genius yesterday so that families can claim those spots, and we are working our way towards 30 students spending the evening at Solomon with myself, Ms. Ptak, and special guests. It is available to students in grades 3-8, so don't miss out!
News and Updates

  • Kindergarten registration for our neighborhood families has started and will continue daily, 12:30-3:30. Even if your child is in our Pre-K program and intends to come to Solomon as a neighborhood Kindergarten student in the fall, you still need to register in advance. We would love to get everyone registered before offer letters go out to non-neighborhood students (both sibling and general lottery) on or around April 27.

  • Just a reminder: Wednesday, April 18, is Report Card Pick-Up Day. We want 100% attendance that day from our parents. Conferences are available 11-2:30 and 3:15-6. Contact your child's homeroom teacher if you have any questions. It is a day of non-attendance for students.

  • Attention 5/6 Girls Soccer players: The game schedule was revised by the district yesterday. A revised schedule is available here. Practice starts this Tuesday (every Tuesday and Wednesday, 5:10-6:10, on our turf field), and the first game is next Saturday, April 21, at Portage Park.

  • Congratulations to our students that placed at the City History Fair and are now moving on to the State History Fair in Springfield on May 3. Way to go, Cougars, and kudos to Ms. Liu for getting our students ready!

  1. Alice Hamilton: The Pioneer of Industrial Toxicology by, Richard H., Xuan L., Brian N., and Hannan A.

  • The 5 Essentials/My Voice My School parent survey is now open and available here. The survey is open until May 11, and it is an important way for us as a school to identify strengths and areas of growth moving forward. The online survey is available in English, Spanish, Polish, Vietnamese, and Chinese, and paper copies of the survey in Arabic will be available at our Report Card Pick-Up Day on April 18. Results of the survey are reported out on our district's school report card, and we share at our State of the School presentation. Thank you for your thoughtful responses.

  • Our Solomon Scholastic Book Fair is April 16-20. The theme is Paws for Books. Ms. McReynolds will need volunteers to work the fair, so if you are interested and available, please reach out to her at temcreynolds@cps.edu. The online fair is open April 11-24th and can be found here.

  • Our last principal coffee of the year (for intermediate grade, 3rd-5th, parents) and prospective parent tour of the year is scheduled for April 26. As always, you can check our website (solomon.cps.edu) for the most up-to-date calendar.
