Solomon Principal Newsletter: April 21, 2017
Dear Parents and Community,

Congratulations to our 5th/6th grade Girls' Soccer team, who won their first game of the season versus CICS-Irving Park yesterday, 5-1. Briana D. scored 3 goals for the Cougars. Next up, the team takes on Hibbard Elementary at 11am on Saturday, April 29, at Independence Park. Good luck!

News and Updates
  • Thank you to all parents that attended Report Card Pick-up Day on April 19. Over 98% of our parents conferenced with teachers this week as we prepare our students to finish the school year strong. All those attending were able to see the student Art Fair in our gymnasium, which highlighted the great work our students did with Ms. Diane from Go Get Your Smock in the first semester.

  • Additionally, our partnership with Dancing with Class, another arts enrichment program supported through your contributions and grant writing, will be demonstrated in our annual PK-2nd grade dance performance on Wednesday, April 26, at 10:30am in the gymnasium. Come for our PTO meeting, and then stay to see our primary grade students perform a range of dances!

  • This week Ms. Stirling shared a flier with information on how to get your tickets for this year's Dancing with the Solomon Stars event on May 5 at 6:30pm in our gymnasium. This year, thanks to the fundraising efforts of our PTO, tickets are free. That said, there are limited numbers of tickets available to see the dances our 3rd-8th graders have prepared with the support of Dancing With Class, so be sure to RSVP in advance. A copy of the document that went home in backpacks this week can also be found here
  • Congratulations to the 4th grade for purchasing $1000 worth of books at this year's book fair. For reaching that milestone, all 4th graders will have the opportunity to participate in the whole-class incentive, a "camping experience" with Mr. Gamble at Solomon later this school year. Stay tuned for details! Overall, we approached $6000 in sales at the fair, not including online sales. Happy reading!

  • Our final principal coffee of the school year is scheduled for Thursday, April 27, at 8am in our library. Parents of 6th and 7th graders are invited to attend. Our final official school tour for prospective parents and community members is also scheduled for April 27 at 9:30am in the main office.

  • We received notice from the Office of Early Childhood this week that parents interested in having their child(ren) attend pre-school at Solomon for the 2017-2018 school year can apply online starting May 15th at

  • This week Chicago Public Schools shared a new vision and mission for the district. I invite you to read more about it here

  • Members of the community have asked me to share information about the upcoming CAPS meeting on April 26, 7:30pm, at the Salvation Army Headquarters (5040 N. Pulaski). This meeting is for Beats 1711 and 1712, which includes Solomon. All are welcome to attend and participate in community policing.
My Voice, My School Survey for Parents
The My Voice, My School survey for parents opened up on April 1, and it continues through April 30. The survey can be found at, where you can access it in multiple languages (including Arabic, Spanish, Urdu, and Vietnamese, among others), and responses are anonymous. Hard copies of the survey are available at school, if you prefer those.

By giving 10-15 minutes of your time, you can significantly improve the education of your children. Also, the results from the My Voice, My School Parent Survey contribute to the “grade” given to Solomon, in the form of our SQRP rating.
WJR 2017: Just Move It!
Walk-Jog-Roll-a-Thon is only 3 weeks away! This annual event highlights our commitment to equity, health, and wellness for all of our students through movement and exercise.

With this being the 5th anniversary for WJR, we invite you to contribute in any number of ways. Please see the attached fliers for more information.

This year's fundraising goes towards supporting our arts enrichment programming, including the wonderful student art that you saw highlighted at the Art Fair during Report Card Pick-up Day and the dance programs noted in this newsletter. Your contributions help us to sustain arts enrichment that we would not be able to provide without your help. Thank you!

Most Likely to Succeed Film Screening
Parents, community members, and students in 6th-8th grades are invited to attend a film screening of Most Likely to Succeed at Palmer Elementary (5051 N. Kenneth) on Monday, May 22, at 6pm. This event, jointly-hosted by schools in our community, including Solomon, and the North River Commission, highlights the work ahead as we prepare our students for 21st century learning.

Parent Teacher Organization Updates
Interested in volunteering for International Night on June 2? We need plenty of help organizing the event, soliciting goods, and staffing the tables the evening of the event. If you noted on the volunteer interest survey at the beginning of the year, we will be reaching out to you; if not, feel free to send Mr. Gamble an email at or calling the mail office. Thanks!

Our shoe drive will be wrapping up on April 30, so you have one more week to drop off your new or slightly-used shoes at Solomon. Our official count as of today is 97 bags, and with each additional bag over 100, that means more money for the school. Keep it up!

Our next PTO meeting is April 26 at 9:15am in our lunchroom. This is the last meeting before WJR, so there will be a lot to plan and discuss!
Fonseca Martial Arts registration
Registration is open for the spring term that started on Tuesday, April 18, and continues through Thursday, June 15. See the attached flier on registration information for the spring term. Even if you haven't participated before, this is a great program for teaching balance and fitness. All are welcome!

Chicago Enrichment Programs
Registration for before and after-school programming is available through our partner at Chicago Enrichment Programs. You can go to their website to get more information and sign up for programming.
Don't miss these upcoming events!

Looking for more dates? For your reference, a paper copy of the school calendar (April 2017 Community Calendar) will continued to be shared as well. Even better, check our community calendar on our website (, which is updated in real time!
In case you missed it...
Congratulations to our students who presented their findings at this year's Chicago Metro History Fair at Lane Tech yesterday, after being selected as the winning entries at Solomon last month. Not pictured: Hannan A., Richard H.
A big thank-you to our Visual Arts Committee for organizing our Art Fair, showing off the work that our students did in the Go Get Your Smock program last semester. It was a great celebration of what our students can do!
Interested in volunteering at Solomon? Please print out and complete our Solomon Volunteer Interest Survey, and then submit to the main office. We are constantly reaching out to parents for assistance on projects both big and small, and our volunteer list lets us know who is interested in helping out in different ways. Thanks--we love our volunteers!

The district has started a program to share information to volunteers across CPS, including a way to gain digital badges for participating in volunteer activities and a chance to win prizes. I'll link to that information below:
