Your back-to-school edition of the weekly newsletter from the team at Hannah G. Solomon Elementary School, the pride of Peterson Park!
Solomon Principal Newsletter: August 25, 2017
Dear Parents and Community,

Welcome back to the first "official" back-to-school newsletter of the year. In this space each week, you will find "news you can use", but also, I hope to show you some of the great work going on behind the scenes. I will be sharing with everyone our beliefs as a school community and how we try to bring those beliefs to action.

That said, this week we have a lot of practical things to share! I look forward to greeting many of you at our "early bird" supply drop-off on Thursday, August 31, from 3-4pm. Please enter through our main entrance on Hamlin, where you will be directed to your child's classroom by our helpful staff. In the classroom, you can drop off supplies, say hi to the teacher and staff, meet other parents, and (most importantly for your child) get a ticket that can be redeemed for a free ice cream treat out on our playground, courtesy of our Parent-Teacher Organization (see below). Pack a sandwich, bring a chair, and socialize with other parents on the playground afterwards.

Can't make it on August 31? I will be excited to greet you outside at 9am on September 5! Be sure to stick around for our Parent Send-Off from 9-10am in our library that morning. We will supply some light breakfast and a lot of tissues.

Read on below for more information about our new staff, construction, parent volunteers, after-school programs and more!
Say hello to our new teaching staff!
Ms. Sandy Coppa will be teaching our Pre-Kindergarten class in room 108 now that Ms. Tracy McReynolds has moved over to our Kindergarten classroom. Ms. Coppa comes to us with over 10 years of PK experience and National Board certification from Mitchell Elementary. She has been an immense help with PK registration this summer already.

Ms. Christi Gleeson will be teaching our 3rd grade class in room 110. Ms. Gleeson served as a student teacher at Solomon during the 2016-2017 school year in room 101, and during that time, sharpened her skills in balanced literacy instruction. She will be taking over the classroom for Ms. Joan Jones, who retired in the spring.

Mrs. Elizabeth Jones will be teaching our part-time ESL program, working with students across multiple grade levels and collaborating with teachers to identify the best ways to support the language needs of our students. Mrs. Jones is returning to Solomon, where she has previously taught 2nd and 4th grade, as well as upper grade math. She is taking over the classroom from Ms. Jennifer Johnson, who retired in the spring.

In other staffing news, we are excited to announce that Ms. Sheri Chazdon, in addition to her teaching duties, will be sharing some case management duties with Ms. Sarita Ptak.

Additionally, we are in the final stages of the hiring process for 3 new Special Education Classroom Assistants.
News and Updates
  • Building Updates: Construction in the interior of the building has wrapped up, though it will continue on the exterior for several more weeks. Completed so far, among other things: New roof, new/improved masonry and tuckpointing, bathroom improvements, padding installation in gymnasium, interior painting, new ceiling tiles. Still to be completed: Exterior door replacement/repair, blacktop replacement in staff lot/courtyard. I would like to give a HUGE shout-out to Mr. Shedrick Larks and Ms. Carmen Velez, our custodial team, for working in a very compressed amount of time to get teacher classrooms up to our standards of cleanliness.

  • Volunteer: A new addition to our volunteer options this year is a Room Parent program in grades PK-5. When you pick up your Volunteer Interest Survey, available starting on August 31 at the Supply Drop-Off, you will see a "job description" for this great new opportunity at Solomon for enhanced communications. I want to thank parent Ms.Gillian Deppeler and teacher Ms. Tracy McReynolds for helping to visualize what this program will encompass. I hope you apply!

  • Also, on the volunteer issue, all volunteers at Solomon, including field trip chaperones, will be asked this year to complete the district-mandated registration at cpsvolunteers.org. Registration is fairly quick and painless, and we thank you in advance for taking the time to complete this task.
Chicago Enrichment Programs (Before and After School Care)
Registration for before- and after-school programming is available through our partner at Chicago Enrichment Programs. New this year: Expanded before school hours, starting at 7am! You can go to their website to get more information and sign up for programming (online registration opens next week). You can also complete this form and sent it to chicagoenrichmentprograms@gmail.com.

We are excited to announce a new partnership with iCook, an arts vendor that teaches after-school cooking classes at Sauganash, Wildwood, and Hamilton, among other places. For information about times and pricing, click on the attached flier.
