In other news...
  • Details are still forthcoming, but I am excited to announce some great news for our community. I was informed this week that the district is committing $4 million dollars from their capital improvement budget for the repair and/or replacement of our roof at Solomon, which is a source of many leaks building-wide.  Specifics have not been provided, including the timeline, but it is a tremendous positive to see that the city and district are committed to the success of our school.  I will share any updates that I receive.
  • Our wonderful student teachers from this fall are preparing to leave us. I want to thank our student teachers from NEIU, Ms. Christi Gleeson, Ms. Angela Jaramillo, and Mr. Christopher Birt, as well as our student teacher from the Hebrew Theological College, Batsheva Nochomovitz, for all of their hard work this semester in the service for our students. I'd also like to acknowledge Ms. Sartain, Ms. Sak, Mr. Martin, and Ms. Chazdon for all the mentoring that they have done in the process. We wish them the best in their educational careers and know that will make positive, dynamic contributions wherever they go!
  • Our Toys for Tots drive will continue through the end of next week, so be sure to bring in those new, unwrapped toys. Thank you to Ms. Ptak, Ms. Zachar, and our Student Council for their leadership and service .
  • Auditions for our Winter Play, Alice in Wonderland, will be after school on December 15, with practice beginning in January.
Chicago Enrichment Programs
CEP's first Lego Architecture Workshop with Mr. Rodney was a rousing success, with over 20 students working on building their own Lincoln Memorial over two days this week. We hope to offer more programming like this for our students and families. Registration for other before and after-school programming is available through our partner at Chicago Enrichment Programs. You can go to their website to get more information and sign up for programming.
Important Student Safety Reminders
As our winter kicks into high gear, I want to remind everyone that Solomon will have outdoor drop off and recess if the temperature is 20 degrees or above and there is no inclement weather.  If the temperature falls below 20 degrees or if there is inclement weather, Solomon will have indoor drop off, starting at 8:45am, and indoor recess. Inclement weather drop off is in the designated hallway areas for grades K-2 (east wing) and 3-8 (west wing). Please remember to dress appropriate: boots, hats, and gloves are necessities this time of year!

Additional staff is not available prior to 8:45am to supervise students. If you require additional daycare during these winter months, please reach out to our friend Mr. Jake Glickman, proprietor of Chicago Enrichment Programs, to arrange.
Another safety concerns is morning drop-off, afternoon pick-up, and street parking. In order to keep our students safe and passageways clear for students and wheelchairs to maneuver, please remember the following:
  • Parked or idling cars should not block driveways or entrances at any time. Blocked passageways means that buses cannot let off our students in the correct place, and I've seen wheelchairs trying to navigate over grass as a result.
  • Parents should not park in the staff lot at any time, unless previously arranged with school staff, to ensure student safety at entry and dismissal.
  • Please respect the student crossing guards and their directions. A kind, generous parent has purchased stop signs for our crossing guards to make them more visible and to assist them with their jobs.
  • Cars should not park the wrong way on streets. This is a safety concern for both cars driving down the street and students crossing the street.
Thank you for all of your assistance in keeping our students safe!
Fonseca Martial Arts Winter Sign-Up
Parents can now sign up their students in grades K-6 for the winter term morning martial arts classes with Fonseca Martial Arts. Classes start on January 10 and continue through April 6. Please register by January 6, 2017, at their website.
Parent Teacher Organization News
A couple of highlights to share about upcoming PTO events:
  • We are excited to announce that we have a new PTO fundraiser scheduled at Five Below (any Chicago location) for the entire month of December. Please bring in the flier attached so that a portion of the proceeds come back to Solomon's PTO.
  • Our other upcoming PTO fundraiser is scheduled for December 16 at Oberweis Ice Cream and Dairy Store (6469 N. Lincoln). Bring this flier to have a portion of proceeds come back to Solomon's PTO.

  • For everyone clearing out your closets--this year's shoe drive will be coming soon! Don't donate those old shoes yet!

  • Our next meeting is scheduled for December 21 at 9:30am in the school lunchroom.

  • Be sure to LIKE the Solomon School PTO on Facebook to get current information and reminders.

CPS Budget Update
Recently, Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner vetoed Senate Bill 2822, which provides $215 million to Chicago in FY 2017. This action jeopardizes the funding of Chicago Public Schools, including Solomon Elementary, moving forward. Please see this letter from the district on how you can respond.

Don't miss these upcoming events!

December 13: Local School Council meeting (5:30, library)

December 16: Winter Concert (6:00, gym)

December 23: Last day of school before Winter Break

January 9, 2017: Return from Winter Break
Looking for more dates? For your reference, a paper copy of the school calendar (December 2016 Community Calendar) will continued to be shared as well. Even better, check our community calendar on our website (, which is updated in real time!
Celebrations from this week!
Many thanks to our friends at Von Steuben's Tech Club and Assistant Principal Jennifer Sutton, who worked with our librarian Ms. Coleman to help our students participate in the Hour of Code learning today.
