The weekly newsletter from the team at Hannah G. Solomon Elementary School, the pride of Peterson Park and a 2017 National Blue Ribbon School
Solomon Principal Newsletter: March 9, 2018
Dear Parents and Community,

Sometimes an elementary school feels like a it was a zoo! Ms. Coppa invited the team from Flying Fox Conversation to visit our Pre-K students, and she arranged for our special visitors to travel a few other classrooms as well. The Pre-K students in 108 came up with a lot of questions to ask about the animals, which you can see below. Way to go, Room 108--we have some junior zoologists here!
News and Updates

  • Put on your dancing shoes! Dance programming with our partners from Dancing with Class begins this coming Wednesday, March 14. Every Wednesday and Friday from now through June, our 3rd though 8th graders will get 10 weeks of dance instruction with our favorite dance partner, Mr. VH, culminating in our Dancing with the Solomon Stars (date TBD) and 4th-6th grade Dance-Off competition at the Chicago Cultural Center (May 31). Our Pre-K through 2nd graders get 6 weeks of dance instruction with Mr. VH as well, with their own mini-DWTSS at the end too! While we were not recipients of the Creative Schools Grant this year, this programming was 100%-funded through the support of the Solomon Parent Teacher Organization. Bringing arts enrichment to all of our students helps to give them new ways to stretch and grow, academically, physically, and social-emotionally!

  • Ms. Ptak is surveying adults in our community for a Career Day/Evening event that we are looking to host later this spring. If you are interested in speaking with a group of students about your current job/career, please take this brief survey. We look forward to sharing more details about the event soon!

Parent Teacher Organization Updates
We will be sharing out the different ways you can bid and win for some of the great raffle and auction items at this year's Soiree, but the best way to win is to be there! Some of the great things you can bid on...

  • Teacher and staff experiences: such as, an overnight lock-in at the school!
  • Cubs tickets
  • Theater tickets
  • Restaurant gift cards and experiences
  • Unique baskets
  • Much, much more!!!

We are now accepting donations for this year's Soiree! If you are a business owner or know of a business that would like to make a donation to this year's fundraiser, we would love to add that business to our auction or raffle. We take care to promote those businesses that support Solomon! If you are interested in donating, contact the PTO at If you are interested in soliciting a business on our behalf, feel free to use this letter to tell them about our fundraiser.

This year’s event will be at Moretti’s in Edison Park, 6727 N. Oliphant.  Tell your friends and family, and don’t miss out on this year’s event! All of this helps support your child's learning experiences at Solomon, so support a great cause!

Cleaning out your closets? Get ready for another shoe drive this year at Solomon. Start collecting those old, but wearable, shoes, and we will let you know soon when they can be dropped off at school, all to raise funds for our students!

Our next PTO meeting is an evening affair, and the last one before the Soiree: March 14 at 6pm in our library--all are welcome!
