Your weekly bulletin from the team at Hannah G. Solomon Elementary School, the pride of Peterson Park!

Solomon Principal Newsletter: May 12, 2017
Dear Parents and Community,

We have had a few weeks of athletic triumph recently. I just want to highlight a few of our achievements:

  • Our Special Olympians in Rooms 117 and 122 (grades 3-8) won 5 Gold, 13 Silver, 7 Bronze medals (see the pictures below) last week at Eckersall Stadium. We are so proud of the spirit and focus that they demonstrated, especially in some nasty weather!
  • Buddy Baseball started this week, with the athletes being our K-2 students in Room 104 and their peer buddies in grades 4-7. This inclusive event will continue with three more games this year, and the next game is on May 24 between 9:30-1pm (Horner Park, 3843 N. California). I know the team would love a cheering section, so please stop by to see our Cougars in action!
  • Our 5th/6th grade girls soccer team is undefeated at 3-0 and looks to extend the streak against Murphy Elementary at 9am tomorrow (Independence Park, 3945 N. Springfield).
  • Our Tumbling team is getting ready for their performance on May 24 at 6:30pm in our gymnasium.
  • The 36 runners on our Girls on the Run and Heart and Sole teams (and their adult running buddies) are in the final week of training for their 5k race in Grant Park on May 20.

Being a teacher and coach in previous work, I know well how athletic engagement leads to improved academic performance and increased connectedness to school. More engagement means well-rounded students that can excel in multiple areas!

WJR 2017: Just Move It!
Walk-Jog-Roll-a-Thon was a tremendous success today. It was a perfect day, kids got some good exercise, and we had over 50 volunteers to help facilitate.

Pledges are still being collected, and now that you know how many laps your child(ren) did, we will be collecting money in the main office through the next few weeks. Remember, there are some great incentives for students and classes that hit different targets (see attached). We thank you in advance for supporting our arts enrichment programming at Solomon!

A huge thank-you to our PTO officers (Jamie Kaplan, Donna Rempas, and Anne Moschopoulos) and the entire PTO for organizing this event. From ordering and providing the t-shirts to handing out bananas to our athletes, they led this event every step of the way.
Most Likely to Succeed Film Screening
Parents, community members, and students in 6th-8th grades are invited to attend a film screening of Most Likely to Succeed at Palmer Elementary (5051 N. Kenneth) on Monday, May 22, at 6pm. This event, jointly-hosted by schools in our community, including Solomon, and the North River Commission, highlights the work ahead as we prepare our students for 21st century learning.

Parent Teacher Organization Updates

Please note that our Chipotle PTO giveback day has been changed to May 24, 4-8pm, to coincide with the new date for our evening Tumbling show. As a reminder, you will need to bring a copy (paper or digital), and Solomon will receive 50% of the total sales that afternoon. Buy dinner, and giveback to Solomon!

Also, for your calendar, is our Lou Malnati's giveback on June 12. See the attached flier for details.

Our next PTO meeting is May 17 at 9:15am in our lunchroom. International Night is sure to be on the plate for discussion!

Don't forget that the PTO supports a number of upcoming Solomon events:
  • International Night: June 2
  • Kindergarten Tea: June 7

Interested in volunteering at Solomon? Please print out and complete our Solomon Volunteer Interest Survey, and then submit to the main office. We are constantly reaching out to parents for assistance on projects both big and small, and our volunteer list lets us know who is interested in helping out in different ways. Thanks--we love our volunteers!

The district has started a program to share information to volunteers across CPS, including a way to gain digital badges for participating in volunteer activities and a chance to win prizes. I'll link to that information below:
