Solomon Principal Newsletter: November 18, 2016
Dear Parents and Community Members--

We will take a break from the newsletter next week with the short week (no school Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday), but when we return, we have a busy December. If you haven't done so already, put the Winter Concert on your calendar now. On December 16th at 6pm, we will have our K-8 musical performance, followed with a PTO Giveback event at the Oberweis Ice Cream and Dairy Store in Lincolnwood. Last year we packed the gym for the performance, and we hope to see even more for this performance. Families in PK will be able to see their student performances during the dress rehearsal for the Winter Concert during the school day on December 16, time TBD.
Book Fair Wrap-Up
Thanks to all of our student and parent volunteers, as well as Ms. McReynolds, Ms. Tamborino, and staff for another successful book fair. In addition to your gifts purchased for teachers, revenue from the book fair translated into $50-100 credits for teachers to spend on books at the fair. The library, in addition to the donation box, received a $500 credit for new books. The Junior Crew will see you again in the spring!
5th-8th Grade Boys and Girls Basketball
Over 20 students have signed up for the new district-wide elementary sports program. The district has extended the sign-up period for 2 more days, so if you are interested in playing competitive basketball this winter for a Solomon team and you are in grades 5-8, please return the registration form to the main office no later than Tuesday, November 22. Go Cougars!
Following up from last week, thanks to everyone that donated to Ms. Ptak's Donors Choose page. If you are interested in helping to build a library of indestructible books to be used throughout the school, especially for our cluster program students and early childhood, visit her page here. Thank you for your support!
Thank you to all that responded to the Solomon Dress Code survey. Students presented their findings at the Local School Council meeting on November 15, and our school's PPLC and LSC will be determining next steps.
Auditions for our Winter Play, Alice in Wonderland, will be on December 15, with practice beginning in January. If you are interested, please return this form to the main office as soon as you can. We are still looking for an upper grade student or two to join the cast, so please see me if you are interested.
Lane Tech Computer Science Open House
Lane Tech College Prep is hosting a Computer Science program open house at the school (2501 W. Addison) on Saturday, November 19, from 9-11am. Find out more at the link below, or see the attached flier.
Outdoor Recess in the Wintertime: As a guideline, 20 degrees is the cut-off for students going outside, even if there is snow on the ground. Please have students dress appropriately for outdoor recess in cold weather. Primary grade students should have a pair of boots and some back-up clothing at school just in case.
Parent Teacher Organization News
A couple of highlights to share about upcoming PTO events:
  • Candlelite Chicago (7452 N. Western) is hosting our next restaurant giveback this Sunday from 11am to 2am. See the flier attached. We hope to see you there!
  • If you are interested in serving on our Soiree planning committee, please contact our chair, Yvonne Lemperis, at

  • Our next meeting is scheduled for December 21 at 9:30am in the school lunchroom.

  • Be sure to LIKE the Solomon School PTO on Facebook to get current information and reminders.

Interested in volunteering at Solomon? Please print out and complete our Solomon Volunteer Interest Survey, and then submit to the main office. We are constantly reaching out to parents for assistance on projects both big and small, and our volunteer list lets us know who is interested in helping out in different ways. Thanks--we love our volunteers!
Pennies Fundraiser
We will be collecting pennies and loose change in the main office all year so that we can purchase these new, environmentally-conscious drinking fountains, with a goal of having them installed by the end of the year.

As of November 17, we have raised $175.66 towards our goal. Additionally, I'm excited to announce that the PTO will match the funds raised--meaning, when we have raised enough for one drinking fountain (approximately $1100), the PTO will be paying for the second one. Thank you to all parents, teachers, and community members for your generosity, and keep those pennies (and dollars!) coming!
Before and After-School Programming
Registration for other before and after-school programming is available through our partner at Chicago Enrichment Programs. You can go to their website to get more information and sign up for programming. Be on the lookout for some information about upcoming Lego programming!
Applications for 2017-2018 School Year

The information below is for families that do not reside in our neighborhood boundaries and would like their child to attend Solomon as a new student starting in the 2017-2018 school year.

Families that would like to apply for any open seats at Solomon should complete the online or paper application by December 9, 2016, at 11:59 p.m.  This is especially important for siblings, since you must have an application for the child that is not a Solomon student.  Make sure to note on the application that you have a child currently enrolled at Solomon.

We do not currently know how many seats will be open for next year, but you must have an application on file to be considered. Prospective students are placed in a random list by the Office of Access and Enrollment in CPS. That list is then shared with Solomon in March, and then Ms. Smith and I go down the list until all of the open seats are filled. Due to students moving in and out of the neighborhood, we may be calling families from the list right up until school begins.

The date of our next prospective parent tour is December 1 at 9:30am.
Don't miss these upcoming events!
November 21-23: Thanksgiving Holiday--No School for Students. The building will be closed.

December 6-7: PTO Holiday Shop

December 23: Last day of school before Winter Break
Looking for more dates? For your reference, a paper copy of the school calendar (November 2016 Community Calendar) will continued to be shared as well, and the November calendar will go home on Mondayl. Even better, check our community calendar on our website (, which is updated in real time!
