Solomon Principal Newsletter: September 23, 2016
Dear Parents and Community:

I would like to thank all of the parents and staff that came to our Curriculum Night this past Tuesday. I know that the staff enjoyed sharing their plans with parents and starting that collaborative relationship that is so important for our students' success. Volunteers are vital to helping us achieve our goals, both within the classroom and in our community. At our Curriculum Night, I shared a document with all parents to find out all the ways that parents would like to volunteer at Solomon. Please take a few moments to complete, and homeroom teachers will collect these for our reference. Thank you!

The 1st Coffee with the Principal coming up next week
We have our first morning coffee with the principal scheduled for this coming Thursday, September 29, at 8am in the school library. The first coffee is for parents of our 8th graders. These coffees are a chance to ask me questions, and I take some time to discuss how we are supporting the 8th graders specifically with academic and social-emotional learning this year. A particular focus will be on the high school admissions process. I look forward to seeing all parents over the course of the year; check out our Solomon calendar for the dates this year.

With that, for our 7th and 8th grade parents, here is the link to information about this year's regional high school fair at Sauganash on October 19. Ms. Ptak, our counselor, will be there to support our students and families who attend.

Before and After School Care: Chicago Enrichment Programs
The website for Chicago Enrichment Programs is live, and it is the best place to get information about the fees and programming for our students. Soon parents will be able to register via the website. Find out more information here.
Welcome, Officer Sean!
We are excited to introduce a new member to the Solomon team. Sargeant Sean Ronan from the Chicago Police Department is joining us to serve as the afternoon security officer. Be sure to give a big Solomon welcome to "Officer Sean" when you see him! It is an honor to have both him and Officer Alvarado, a Chicago Police Department officer and our morning security officer, work with our students every day.
Parent Portal login information went home via "kid mail" this week for our 1st grade students in Room 101 and students new to Solomon. To create an account, you will need a PIN number, which is provided by the school. With an account, you can monitor student grades from home. If you need any assistance with your Parent Portal account, please visit the main office for assistance. We will also have the computer lab open to assist parents on our first Parent-Teacher Conference day in November. As a reminder, the portal is not open for kindergarten parents due to the format of the kindergarten report card.

Assessment Update: Students in grades PK through 8 have nearly wrapped up some of the beginning of the year standardized assessments that are so important for our staff to gauge student strengthens and areas of opportunity. Our primary grade students were given the TRC/Dibels assessment for reading fluency and comprehension, and they will be re-assessed with this tool throughout the year. Some students (1st grade and new students to the district) are taking a beginning of the year NWEA MAP test, which assesses reading and math skills; all K-8 students will be re-assessed at the middle and end of the year with this tool. The PARCC test is still scheduled to be administered in the spring as well. Our promise to you is that we will use this information to make wise instructional decisions and to share that student progress with you. At our next LSC meeting, I will share the state of the school address, which will include standardized testing results from last year, with the community.
Don't miss these upcoming events!
September 27: Peterson Park Improvement Association State of the Community meeting, 7-9pm in the gymnasium. Hear from our local representatives and officials about the state of affairs in Peterson Park, and meet your fellow community members.

September 29: Principal Coffee with 8th grade parents, 8-8:50am in the school library

October 4: If you are a parent with a child in our Early Childhood Special Education classroom with Ms. Richard (Room 106), you are invited to an important meeting in our library from 2:30-3:30pm. The focus of this meeting will be district changes to the transportation policy for students in this program, which will begin this fall. Please plan on being here to learn about these changes. A representative of the district will be here to answer any questions that you have.

October 10: Columbus Day--NO SCHOOL

October 11: LSC meeting, 5:30pm, in the school library

Looking for more dates? For your reference, a paper copy of the school calendar (September 2016 Community Calendar) will continued to be shared as well. Even better, check our community calendar on our website (, which is updated in real time!
Consider joining the North River Commission for their upcoming Educational Planning meeting at Palmer Elementary (5051 N. Kenneth) on October 13 at 7pm. I plan on going to provide a voice for Solomon on educational priorities and initiatives in our community.
District leadership has asked principals to share this letter regarding the progress on negotiations with the Chicago Teachers Union. As news becomes official, I will share it all through this newsletter.
