Your back-to-school edition of the weekly newsletter from the team at Hannah G. Solomon Elementary School, the pride of Peterson Park!
Solomon Principal Newsletter: September 4, 2017
Dear Parents and Community,

We welcomed our teachers and staff back last week, and it was an eventful one--professional development on our new social and emotional learning curricula that you will be learning more about, getting classrooms cleaned up and ready after a summer of construction, some new student registrations, and the anticipation of a new school year.

I look forward to seeing everyone at 9am on Tuesday, September 5, for the first day of school. I hope that after you drop your child(ren) off, you will enter the building through our main office and go to our library for our annual Parent Send-Off, from 9-10am. Here, you can grab a light snack, a tissue if need be, and have your first adult conversation in three months!

Read on below for more information about our entry procedures, sports and after-school programming, and more!
Student Entry and Exit Procedures
  • Door #3 (NE corner of the school): Grades PK-2 enter every day at 9am (Afternoon PK enters at 1:20pm); grades 1-2 exit at 4pm
  • Door #6 (NW corner of the school): Grades 3-8 enter every day at 9am (all students arriving by bus also enter via this door); grades 3-8 exit at 4pm
  • Door #5 (on Granville) : Both PK classes are dismissed at this door (11:35 and 3:55)
  • Door #2 (on Hamlin): Kindergarten is dismissed at 4pm
  • All students exiting by bus leave through Door #1 (main entrance) at 4pm
  • Students in before- or after-school program with Chicago Enrichment Program are dropped-off and picked-up at Door #6

Door #1 on Hamlin is our main entrance, and that is the entrance where we ask our parents to use when visiting the school. PK parents will be allowed into the building with their child on the three days; all other students will say goodbye to their parents outside at their assigned entrance starting on the first day.

Inclement Weather:

Students may enter the building starting at 8:55 through their assigned rooms if there is inclement weather. Students will sit outside of their classroom and will be supervised by staff until the 9:00am bell rings.
News and Updates
  • Registration for Fall Sports Programming (Boys Soccer, Girls and Boys Volleyball, and Girls and Boys Cross Country) is now open for students in grades 5-8 through September 22. All sports are "no try out, no cuts" so everyone should feel welcome to participate. Paper applications will go home this week and are also available here. Please return completed applications to the main office by September 22.

  • Fonseca Martial Arts programming will start on Tuesday, September 12, at 7:45am. Students in grades K-6 are welcome to sign up for this morning program that we host in our gymnasium twice a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7:45-8:45am) through June. Learn more at www.fonsecamartialarts.com/solomon, and be on the lookout for fliers via kidmail this week!

  • Also in kidmail this week, many, many forms will come home. Please take the time to complete and return back to your child's homeroom teacher, as these forms help to determine state and federal funding for us in some cases. Information about this year's fees will go out to families after the September 12 Local School Council meeting.

  • All volunteers at Solomon, including field trip chaperones, will be asked this year to complete the district-mandated registration at cpsvolunteers.org. Registration is fairly quick and painless, and we thank you in advance for taking the time to complete this task. Be on the lookout for your volunteer survey form this year, and please take the time to fill it out. We count on your support!

  • We noticed some missing items in the supply kits that parents ordered from SchoolKidz. Our PTO leadership has volunteered to reach out to the company to help fix the problem, but in the meantime, we need to know what items are missing from your kit(s), if you ordered one. Our ask is that you come to the main office, obtain a class supply list from Ms. Sandlass or Ms. Tamborino, write your name and your child's name, and identify the missing items. Once we have a comprehensive list of all the missing items, we will work with the company to get them. Between the late arrival of the kits and the missing items, it has been a headache, so I truly apologize for any convenience that this has caused.
Chicago Enrichment Programs (Before and After School Care)
Registration for before- and after-school programming is available through our partner at Chicago Enrichment Programs.

  • Before-school care: 7-9am
  • After-school care: 4-6pm

You can go to their website to get more information and sign up for programming. Questions? Follow up with Mr. Jake at chicagoenrichmentprograms@gmail.com.

We are excited to announce a new partnership with iCook, an arts vendor that teaches after-school cooking classes at Sauganash, Wildwood, and Hamilton, among other places. For information about times and pricing, click on the attached flier.

Students in Chicago Enrichment Programs are dropped-off and picked-up at Door #6 (NW corner of school, on Avers St.)
Parent Teacher Organization Updates
Many, many thanks to our PTO team for organizing the ice cream giveaway as a part of our back-to-school picnic on Thursday. We had over 140 students bring their school supplies to class early and enjoy some ice cream while doing it!

The first PTO meeting of the year is Wednesday, September 13, at 9:15 in the student lunchroom. There we will set the schedule for the year, as well as elect officers. We would love to see you there!
