Solomon Principal Newsletter: September 16, 2016
Dear Parents and Community:

Happy Mexican Independence Day to all! One of the ways that we drew attention to it today was in music class, with Ms. Stirling showing examples of folkloric music and dance native to Mexico.

One exciting development that I would like to share with our community is a collaborative effort by Mr. Martin, our Physical Education teacher, and teachers from the 4th through 8th grade homerooms. During our school improvement planning, we discussed ways that we could build consistent opportunities for students in our general education and special education cluster classrooms to have meaningful interactions. Through their planning, teachers devised a schedule where students from the general education classrooms are paired with students in a special education cluster classroom once a week. These opportunities help create inclusive practices throughout the school and build communication and leadership skills for all students in the school, a school-wide priority. These "buddies" will then be paired up for all sorts of school events over the course of the year. It was inspiring to see the students "meet" each other today and start their work together. This is one of the reasons that Solomon is a great place for students to learn--diversity is our strength!

Curriculum NIght: September 20, 6-8pm
We are excited to host our parents for our annual Curriculum Night/Open House this coming Tuesday, September 20, from 6-8pm. The evening will start in the gymnasium, and then parents will travel to the different classrooms by 6:30 for the presentations.

One big change this year is to make it an adult-only evening. This will allow teachers to have meaningful conversations with parents about:
  • grading policy
  • homework policy
  • curricula for the core subjects and essentials classes (library, music, PE, and Chinese)
  • ways in which parents can help with homework
  • ways in which parents can volunteer
  • the ways that teachers can be reached to schedule an appointment

External partners and our PTO will be there with informational tables, and a volunteer interest form will be made available to all visitors.

We look forward to have collaborative conversations with all of our parents that will help us support the academic and social-emotional learning for our students. We can't do it w

Reminder: The Community Work Day scheduled for tomorrow, September 17, was postponed and will be re-scheduled for later in the school year. Thank you to those who volunteered their services.
