Solomon Principal Newsletter: September 30, 2016
Dear Parents and Community:

Each year we host the firm Ernst and Young for a day of community service at Solomon. Today, over 40 volunteers from EY and the Constitutional Rights Foundation of Chicago came to Solomon to help us kick off our year of social and emotional learning. Our theme is Cougar Character, and it defines what we want to see in a Solomon graduation. This year, we are focusing on the "core" characters: cooperation, responsibility, empathy, and respect. Our volunteers engaged in activities with students and shared their experiences regarding teamwork, a key element of cooperation. Be sure to ask your child how they demonstrated teamwork today! Thank you to our volunteers, 8th grade student leaders, and the entire staff, including Ms. Liu and Mr. Martin, for their roles in making today's celebration of teamwork happen. See some great pictures from the day below.
Early Childhood Special Education Meeting
As parents in Room 106 with Ms. Richard know, we have scheduled a meeting with those parents on Tuesday, October 4, at 2:30 in our library. The topic was going to be the change in the district's policy on early childhood transportation. This week we received great news that the changes in transportation will not be implemented (for more, see here). We are still asking our parents from Room 106 to come to Solomon on the afternoon of October 4 so that Ms. Ptak, our counselor and case manager, and I can speak with them about the transition to Kindergarten and what that means for their child's Individualized Education Plan (IEP). We hope to see you there!
Student Council Applications
Students interested in applying for a position on our Student Council can get the application here. Our STUCO has many important responsibilities in the school--setting up and participating in our Scholastic book fairs, organizing school dances, leading our Toys for Tots drive, hosting a mock presidential election, and, this year, collecting ideas on playground improvements. Be sure to print out and return to your homeroom teacher.
Way to go, Ms. Stirling!
We are excited to announce that Ms. Stirling, our music teacher, won a $5,000 grant from Ingenuity last week. This grant is specifically for music instruction, and we will be able to make some new program and equipment additions with this grant. Stay "tuned". Congratulations, Ms. Stirling!
2nd grade news: Ms. McCarthy has started a website for parents that would like to sign up as a guest reader for the whole class. To see the available times and sign up, visit here.
Interested in volunteering at Solomon? Please print out this form, complete, and return back to the main office. We are looking for all sorts of different ways that parents can contribute to the Solomon experience. Thanks!

CPS Parent Letter regarding CTU
District leadership has written a letter for parents regarding the potential CTU strike in October, which you can find here. As you may have seen this week, a strike date has been set for Tuesday, October 11. When I get more concrete information to share about how schools will support children during the potential strike, I will share. Our teachers are also planning an informational picket on the morning of Thursday, October 6, before school, so feel free to join them and learn more about their concerns. That event will not impact our instructional day.
Thanks to our 8th grade parents that attended and brought snacks to our first coffee with the principal this year. We spent a lot of time talking about the high school admissions process and how we at Solomon support students and families through the remainder of the year. Our next coffee is for our Kindergarten parents on October 27, in our library at 8am. I look forward to seeing you there!
