Solomon Principal Newsletter: February 9, 2018
Dear Parents and Community,

I hope you and your child(ren) are enjoying your snow day and snow weekend. Maybe you are using this time to get a head start on your independent reading for the quarter--that 25 book celebration at the end of the year promises to be pretty fly, as the cool kids say. Maybe it is a winter hike in the Forest Preserves or North Park Nature Center. However you spend it, enjoy, and stay safe! We will see you on Monday at 9am.
News and Updates

  • As an important reminder, there is no school for students on Monday, February 19 (Presidents' Day).

  • Thanks to a grant from the district totaling nearly $8700, we will be able to offer a homework-help tutoring program for Solomon students beginning in mid-February. We will be sending invitations to individual students in the next two weeks, so please be on the lookout for a letter in your child's book bag. The program will be completely staffed by Solomon educators!

  • Interested in serving as a candidate in the upcoming elections of parent or community representatives for the 2018-2020 Solomon Local School Council (LSC)? Click here for information about the process, here for the timeline of when materials need to be submitted, and here for a copy of the application itself. The election will be on April 18, 2018, and we depend on highly-motivated stakeholders that are committed to the success of our children as we strive to make our school the best neighborhood school in the city!
National School Counselor Week
Students and staff shared this week the different ways that we appreciate our school counselor, Ms. Ptak, during National School Counselor Week (February 5-9). From whole-school support on social-emotional learning and college and career planning, to a more individualized approach for our students transitioning to new schools, seeking assistance with the application process, as well as listening to and guiding students with any of their needs, she is a pivotal part of what makes our school the pride of Peterson Park. Thank you, Ms. Ptak, for all that you do for our kiddos (and the big kiddos too!)
Parent Teacher Organization Updates
Mark your calendars for Friday, April 6 for our Solomon Soiree, our adult social event to raise funds for our school! The fundraising priorities this year include technology upgrades and classroom library purchases. We are looking for support from parents to donate in a variety of ways such as (1) donating gift cards you have that you don’t plan on using, (2) if you are ticket season holder donate a pair of tickets for a sporting event/theater, (3) create a themed gift basket to donate in the raffle, (4) reach out to businesses you know to donate a gift certificate. If you are interested in donating, contact the PTO at
This year’s event will be at Moretti’s in Edison Park, 6727 N. Oliphant.  Tell your friends and family and don’t miss out on this year’s event!
Friday, February 23 from 5-8pm at Cary's Lounge (2251 W. Devon) is our next Solomon PTO Give Back. 50% of sales from those hours will come back to Solomon. Parking is available a few blocks away at 6445 N. Western after 5pm. This is a great opportunity to socialize with other parents and friends, so invite anyone and everyone!

After you attend the showing of Into the Woods on Saturday, March 3, head over to Oberweis Ice Cream and Dairy Store (6469 N. Lincoln) for a Solomon Give Back Day (10am-9pm). When you present the flier, 30% of all purchases come back to the Solomon PTO!

Cleaning out your closets? Get ready for another shoe drive this year at Solomon. Start collecting those old, but wearable, shoes, and we will let you know soon when they can be dropped off at school, all to raise funds for our students!

Our next PTO meeting is Valentine's Day, February 14, at 9:15 in the student lunchroom.
Attendance Corner
As we welcome in February, we are looking forward to the second half of the school year. Report Cards will now be distributed to students this Monday. Take some time to review not only your child's grades, but also his/her attendance. Students who are in the classroom everyday, on-time, are provided with the greatest learning opportunity.  Staying aware of your child's progress is the foundation for supporting success at school.

Congratulations to Room 114 (6th grade) for winning Bob Cat, our traveling trophy for the best homeroom attendance for the month of January, 98.6%! Way to go! Room 117 (3rd-5th) won Hannah the Cougar for our most improved attendance, increasing their attendance by 5.6% last month. That's great persistence!
