Solomon Principal Newsletter: November 30, 2018
Dear Parents and Community--

The week of December 17-21, we are going to be hosting at Solomon an important event for all 5th through 8th grade students and their parents: a screening of the film Screenagers. A film that started with the question whether the director should give her teenage daughter an iPhone, it explores parental struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction and offers solutions to help kids find balance. We are going to offer two dates that week for students and parents to come together to watch it, as well as discuss afterwards how we at Solomon can support those efforts. Our goal is 100% participation from students and a parent in those grades. Please respond to this 2 question survey to help us identify the best two dates for the screenings.

We see that our students in the upper grades struggle with the impact of social media on their personal and academic lives, and as we continually seek to be more responsive to student needs, this is something that we as a school cannot turn a blind eye towards. Please plan on being at Solomon for one of the screenings that week. Once the dates are confirmed, I will share with the whole community. Thank you!
Did You Know?
Our third grade teacher, Ms. Gleeson, was invited to participate this summer in the SMART Exemplary Educators Summit in Calgary, Canada. This week-long professional development gave her the opportunity to participate in a "hackathon", as well as learn about design thinking methodology, SMART software and hardware, and more. She is Solomon's first SEE (SMART Exemplary Educator), as well as the first CPS teacher invited to participate at this conference. Way to go! Below, you can see her sharing her learning with our staff this week.
