Dear Solomon Family--

We are one week away from the start of school! Please read everything below for all of the important information you need to start the school year the Cougar way!

I have a few items I would like to highlight:

  • If you are going to need before- and after-school childcare, please get more information and register for J at School at Solomon at jatschool.jccchicago.org/solomon.
  • If your child will be new to Solomon and will be in 1st through 8th grades this year, Mrs. Mulholland and friends will be hosting a new student orientation at 3pm on Tuesday, August 24. Please come to Door #1 for entry, and be sure to complete the health screener (see information below) prior to entry. Parents that would like a school tour with Principal Gamble are welcome to stay.
  • Due to the increase incidence of COVID-19 in our community, we are making a change for our supply drop-off and open house day on August 26. Instead of inviting all students and parents into the building from 2:45-3:45, we will share a map of our campus in the coming days where homeroom teachers will be available, outside, to meet and greet their new students and take any supplies. The safety of our students and staff is our number one priority, and this change is necessary to protect that safety. Thank you for your flexibility!

We are excited to have all of our students back in the building on August 30. I will send another mid-week update with a map of our campus for supply drop-off and updated information about the locations and times for daily entrances and exits for each room.

Welcome to Solomon!
We are excited to announce new members of the Solomon team:

  • Jenny Hughes is our new Case Manager
  • Alyssa DePaolo and Ali Ahmed are joining us as Special Education Classroom Assistants (see below)

Additionally, our new 2nd graders will have a new homeroom teacher this year, Destini Arceo, who is moving over from one of 4th grade homerooms.

We are still in the hiring process for our second 5th grade homeroom and our Chinese language and culture position. Stay tuned for updates, and please welcome our new and transitioning staff!
I am very excited to continue my teaching journey at Solomon Elementary School. Last year, I worked as a SECA at New Field Primary School mainly in a K-4 cluster classroom and 1:1 support in a kindergarten classroom. Currently, I am working towards completing my master’s degree in Special Education with endorsements in Elementary and Early Childhood Education at Northeastern Illinois University. When I am not working or completing schoolwork, you could find me at Barnes & Noble reading a good book or hanging out with my three siblings. -- Ms. DePaolo
Ali is originally from the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan. He started working at non-profits in Metro Detroit and made his way to Youth Guidance in Chicago. He is excited to join the Solomon community and push the students to their fullest potential.
What you need to get ready for the start of school
Elementary school sports (CPS SCORE) at Solomon will be resuming in the fall. For more information on the sports offered in the fall in grades 5-8 and the registration form, please click here.

We are excited to announce that we are partnering with our friends from J at School for before and after school care at Solomon this coming year. We are anticipating that before school care will available from 7-9am, and after school care will be offered from 4-6pm, with drop-off and pick-up at Door #6. The sign-up link is available here.

I am excited to announce that our Local School Council has approved a one-year suspension of our current dress code policy, with the intent of working with our Student Voice Committee during the 2021-2022 school year to create a new, permanent policy. If you have not returned technology (Chromebooks and iPads) that was loaned to your child for the 2020-2021 school year, please come to Solomon between 9am-4pm to return the device at our main office.

If your child is in our middle school (grades 6-8), please see this note from our counselor, Mrs. Mulholland, regarding the new high school admissions process. In that note there is a survey request for parents to identify what supports you would like to see us provide regarding the new high school admissions process, and we appreciate your responses!

Student fees are returning for the 2021-2022 school year, after we did not collect any fees last year due to the pandemic. For one child, the fee will be $90. With discounts for additional children, the fees for families with two or three children are $150 or $210, respectively. 100% of fees go into instructional materials for your child. The Student Health Forms Booklet includes all the forms that parents and caregivers must complete for their students at the beginning of the year. New forms are required to be completed each year. The booklet includes the Student Medical Information Form which informs the school of any chronic conditions a student may have; Vision and Dental Consent Forms for vision or dental exams; Emergency Contact Form; Media Release Form; and School Messaging Form which allows schools to notify parents via phone or email through the automated system. You can print out the documents (English and Spanish) and either scan and email the completed forms to Mrs. Tamborino at ajtamborino@cps.edu, return them to our main office, or return them to the secure lockbox outside of Door #1.

CPS Re-opening Updates
While schools will not need to complete daily temperature checks for students and staff, ALL individuals that enter the school each day (students, staff, and visitors) will need to complete a health screener. Families that have elected to receive text notifications from the district will get a text each morning with your child's personalized health screener link. Students will need to have one completed for them before they are permitted to enter the building each day.

Didn't get a text with your child's personalized health screener link? You can always to go to our website (solomon.cps.edu, then "Parents" tab) to access this QR code. All you will need to complete the screener is your child's ID number and birthdate. You can see your child's ID number through your Parent Portal login in Aspen, or you can call our main office.

Solomon Calendar
We have developed a year-long Solomon calendar (here) for community events, including open houses, school tours, coffees with the principal, LSC meetings, and more. This list will continue to be updated. You can always see these events on the community calendar at our school website, solomon.cps.edu.

August 24: New Student Orientation (grades 1-8 only), 3:00

August 26: Supply Drop-off and Open House, 2:45 **change of venue: outside on Solomon's campus**

Community Corner
Summer meal service is available at more than 260 district locations throughout the city. Meal kits containing multiple meals can be picked up Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. through Friday, August 20. Click here for more information and to find the meal distribution site nearest you.
