Dear Solomon Family--

Good afternoon to everyone. I am re-sharing some beginning of the year information, along with a few updates:

*First and foremost: Don't forget--school starts one week earlier this year! Monday, August 30 is the first day of school. See you at 9am!

*I am excited to announce that the link for before- and after-school care from our partners at J at School is now live. You can get more information on the program and register here.

*School supply kits should be arriving at your homes soon. We did receive word from the vendor that some items from the order were cancelled: the storage box for 1st grade and the white folder in grades 2-8. You will receive a refund for that portion of the order. We apologize for any inconvenience.

*The district will be hosting a "Northside Re-engagement Community Information Session" at Amundsen High School this coming Thursday evening. Click here for more information.

In partnership,

Chris Gamble

Getting Ready for the 2021-2022 School Year
A document has been created by the district to provide parents with a brief overview of the 2021-2022 school year. Please click here for more information.

The district calendar for the 2021-2022 school year is available here.

We are working on a Solomon calendar (here) for community events, including open houses, school tours, coffees with the principal, LSC meetings, and more. This list will continue to be updated. You can always see these events on the community calendar at our school website, solomon.cps.edu.

A few upcoming events to highlight from that document:

Kindergarten Tea (Kindergarten Room 105, Ms. McReynolds): August 17, 2021 (9:30-10:15)
Meet on the east lawn outside of Door #2 on Hamlin.

Pre-Kindergarten Play Date (Pre-K Room 108, Ms. Coppa): August 23, 2021 (10:00-11:00)

More updates for the 2021-2022 school year
Elementary school sports (CPS SCORE) at Solomon will be resuming in the fall. For more information on the sports offered in the fall in grades 5-8 and the registration form, please click here.

We are excited to announce that we are partnering with our friends from J at School for before and after school care at Solomon this coming year. We are anticipating that before school care will available from 7-9am, and after school care will be offered from 4-6pm, with drop-off and pick-up at Door #6. The sign-up link is available here.

I am excited to announce that our Local School Council has approved a one-year suspension of our current dress code policy, with the intent of working with our Student Voice Committee during the 2021-2022 school year to create a new, permanent policy. What does that mean for this year and what your child should wear? Please click here to see the changes for this school year.

Solomon spirit wear purchases can be made through our partner, Squadlocker. Check out unique Solomon gear here.

If you have not returned technology (Chromebooks and iPads) that was loaned to your child for the 2020-2021 school year, please see our summer business hours to identify a good time to return the device at our main office. Our summer tech coordinator is working on those devices in August, so it would be helpful to get them back sooner rather than later. At this time devices will not be signed out for student use at home; instead, students will be using those devices in their classrooms.

If your child is in our middle school (grades 6-8), please see this note from our counselor, Mrs. Mulholland, regarding the new high school admissions process. In that note there is a survey request for parents to identify what supports you would like to see us provide regarding the new high school admissions process, and we appreciate your responses!

Student fees are returning for the 2021-2022 school year, after we did not collect any fees last year due to the pandemic. For one child, the fee will be $90. With discounts for additional children, the fees for families with two or three children are $150 or $210, respectively. 100% of fees go into instructional materials for your child. For more information about the fees and how you can pay them, please click here.

We currently have one parent and one community representative position on the Solomon Local School Council. To learn more about these positions or to find out how you can apply for one of these vacancies, please contact Mr. Gamble at crgamble@cps.edu.
CPS Re-opening Updates
On July 22, the district sent out health and safety updates to parents for the upcoming school year. Please be sure to review those emails as they contain important updates for what the 2021-2022 school year will look like.

To summarize:

  • Students will be returning to full day, in-person instruction at Solomon, 5 days per week.
  • Masks will be required for all students and adults regardless of vaccine status indoors ONLY. Students, staff, and parents will not be required to wear a mask outdoors on CPS property (entry, recess, dismissal, outdoor classes).
  • Lunch will be a rotation between the student lunchroom and classrooms. I will work with staff to devise a schedule for this process.
  • We will do our best to remain three feet apart when possible but this will not restrict our classroom layouts.
  • Lockers will be available this year for students in grades 3-8 to leave belongings. However, please note that a classroom may still be placed on quarantine at any moment, so please plan ahead with your student about what materials will be needed at home if placed on quarantine.
  • We will continue to have one care room on site for students who display COVID-19 symptoms. If a student is placed in the care room, a doctor's note or a negative COVID test will be required to return to school (which is the same policy as last year).

For families that believe their child cannot attend in-person learning at this point due to their child's medical condition, the district has created a Virtual Academy that parents to which parents will need to apply. The application deadline has been extended until August 6. The Virtual Academy application is the COVID-19 Health Eligibility Form [English] [Spanish]. A student’s doctor will need to submit the form to virtualenrollment@cps.edu or faxed to 773-553-6563 to the attention of Virtual Enrollment.
