Dear Solomon Family--

We have some awesome Solomon families, community members, and staff that are helping to get our Solomon playground improvements on the 39th Ward Participatory Budgeting ballot. Let's get this back on the ballot and get the vote out. For more information and to "endorse" this ballot initiative, scan the QR code below or click here.

Solomon News and Updates
As a reminder to help keep all of us safe:

  • If your child is feeling ill or displaying any COVID symptoms, please stay home.
  • If you traveled out of Illinois this weekend, please review the CPS travel policy to see whether a 7 day quarantine is required for your child.
  • Please answer the self-screener questions each day before sending your child to school. If you answer "yes" to any of the questions, please follow the directions.

We currently have three classrooms that are in quarantine due to reported COVID positive tests. Everyone in those impacted classrooms has been informed via email. Linked here is the community letter, for your reference.

We are so proud of our 5th graders on the 5/6 Boys Basketball team. With quarantines, we were only able to get 4 players to Saturday's game versus Albany Park...and they were able to pull out the short-handed victory! Way to go, Coach Sergio, and our boys for persevering.

Please review this letter regarding Title IX protections against discrimination on the basis of sex.

As a reminder, homework help is available each week through our before/after school program. Drop-in service is available on the following days; students should enter at Door #1.
  • Mondays, 8-9am: Kindergarten through 2nd grade
  • Tuesdays, 4-5:15pm: 6th through 8th grade
  • Wednesdays, 8-9am: 3rd through 5th grade

The GoCPS application process closes in 10 days. If you live outside of Solomon's attendance boundary and are looking for admission for your child in grades K-8 for the 2022-2023 school year, you will need to complete an application through GoCPS. If your child is currently a K-8 student at Solomon, you do not need to re-apply. Our 8th graders will need to finalize their 9th grade applications as well. The application is due December 15 at 6pm.

Parents and community members interested in volunteering at Solomon this year should go to the volunteer registration website. Level 1 volunteers will be required to provide proof of vaccination before being allowed to volunteer. Volunteers must email a copy of their vaccination card or immunization records to our main office, in addition to completing the application on the website. Please read the "Volunteer Policy" tab to see the difference between Level.1 and Level 2 volunteers.

J at School is our partner for before and after school care, each day between 7-9am and 4-6pm. For more information and to sign up, click here.

Solomon spirit wear purchases can be made through our partner, Squadlocker. Check out unique Solomon gear here.

Need assistance from our main office (accessing Parent Portal, getting your child's ID number, an attendance question, etc.) but you think of it off-hours? We have started a form where parents can request main office assistance with any problems or questions you have. Mrs. Tamborino, our school manager, will respond to all requests promptly.
Attendance and COVID-19 Protocols
  • For community resources on student vaccinations, please click here. Families should visit, text your ZIP code to 438829, or call 1-800-232-0233 to find a vaccine appointment. For more information about the district's vaccination program, please click here.

  • Did you know that the city is offering incentives for families getting their children vaccinated, including a $100 Visa gift card? For more information, click here.

  • Before coming to school each day, please self-administer these questions and follow the directions based on your responses.

  • Please return your signed Quarter 2 Student COVID-19 Self-Certification Attestation form to the main office if you haven't done so. The form asks parents to promise that you will self-administer screener questions every morning and keep your child home in case they would not pass that screener. .

  • Students can sign up for in-school COVID-19 testing here, and you can learn more about the testing program here. This testing is required for students in grades 5-8 that are unvaccinated and participate in the CPS Score after-school sports programming.

  • Parents and guardians of fully vaccinated students are urged to submit a copy of their child’s COVID-19 vaccination card to Solomon's main office. Please wait to turn in copies of the card until the final shot has been administered. Vaccination information will be recorded in Aspen, allowing schools to make accurate decisions when it comes to any potential quarantines or classrooms "flipping to remote" due to a potential COVID-19 exposure. Student athletes in grades 5-8 will also need proof of vaccination on file or submit to weekly testing in order to participate in the CPS Score programming. When sending in a copy of the vaccination card, please write your child's name and ID number, if you know it.

  • If your child is going to be absent, we ask that you call the main office (773-534-5226, option 2). Phone calls are helping us follow up with families about the return to in-person learning protocol. An email is not considered a valid submission and will not be accepted to excuse an absence. When leaving a phone message for our main office on your child's absence, please include the following:

  1. Student first and last name
  2. The date of your child's absence
  3. If not a full day absence, the length of time for the absence
  4. The reason for the absence
  5. Your full name (you must be listed as a parent or legal guardian in the student's records)
  6. Your contact number

The third cycle of Participatory Budgeting (PB) in the 39th Ward has started!

PB is a democratic process in which community members directly decide how to spend part of the public budget, also known as the “menu”. “Menu money” is ward-specific money that aldermen allocate to specific needs across the ward. Alderman Nugent has set $500,000 aside from the menu for PB again this year. Check out projects from the last two years of PB here: 39th Ward PB.

PB in the 39th Ward is a three-step process:

  1. Idea Collection - Residents submit infrastructure project ideas that they would like to be funded from the 39th Ward's Infrastructure Improvement Funds.
  2. Review of Infrastructure Project Ideas - The PB Committee reviews infrastructure project ideas and determines what projects will be on the community ballot.
  3. Community Vote - 39th Ward Residents, age 14 years and older, vote on the community ballot. The infrastructure projects that receive the most votes, which add up to $500,000, will be funded
Alderman Nugent's Office has partnered with PB Chicago to develop a new online forum to collect ideas, share information, and vote! This page makes it easier to submit ideas and projects for the ballot. You will need to sign up for an account to access the platform. You can sign up and submit an idea here: PB 39. Idea collection runs through November 18th!

The PB Committee is vital to the PB process. Sign up to join the PB Committee here: Join the Committee. You can find the dates for the PB Committee meetings here: PB Committee Dates.
The last two cycles of PB have been a great success and we are excited for another great year. Please call Alderman Nugent's Office at 773.736.5594 or email if you have any questions.
In case you missed it...
