Dear Solomon Family--

This week we welcomed our 8 newest members of the Solomon Student Voice Committee in grades 5-8. SVC is a student-led group that guides and influences school policy, and it informs various stakeholder groups about the needs of the student body. Mrs. Gleeson and I are excited to work with this group, starting with our first meeting on Tuesday, March 1.

Did you know that for the first time, middle school students (grades 6-8) are now eligible to serve on the Local School Council? This year we will be soliciting applications from any interested 6th and 7th grade students (8th graders will have graduated when the new term starts on July 1). News and Updates
We will have a community forum to gather your feedback on the next steps for our playground improvements on Wednesday, March 30, at 6pm. We will have in-person and virtual meeting options available.

We need your help with safe parking and driving practices at morning pick-up. Cars should not park wrong-way when dropping off students, Cars should not double park to drop off students, with students darting in and out of traffic. If you are parking, please do not park between the no-parking signs on Avers in order to allow our school buses to enter and exit safely. Cars should not be using the parking lot after 8:45am, and then again from 3:45-4:15, to make sure entry and exit for students and staff is safe. It takes everyone doing the right thing to keep everyone safe.

This month's Solomon Coffee with the Principal will be co-hosted by our counselor, Mrs. Mulholland, as we go deeper into our school's work with Conscious Discipline. This in-person meeting will take place at 9:15 on Thursday, March 3, in room 105A. All interested parents are invited to join us!

8th graders will have their graduation photo re-takes on Thursday, March 3, for those students who missed the first shoot or would like a second try.

For families and community members interested in visiting our building, we will offer our monthly tour on Friday, March 4, at 9:30am. Please sign up in advance by calling our main office at 773-534-5226. This is a great opportunity for prospective families to see our work in person.

Applications for spring sports (Co-Ed Flag Football, Track and Field, and Girls Soccer) are due to the main office no later than March 11.

Solomon spring OST (before- and after-school programming) course descriptions will be sent out via newsletter this coming Wednesday, with sign-up to come later this week. Be sure to check out the Wednesday newsletter update if you are interested in signing your child up for any OST programming.

This coming April, Local School Council elections for the 2022-2024 term will occur at Solomon and around the city. The LSC's responsibilities are listed below, and all of the forms that you will need to apply may be found here. For more information about Local School Councils, click here. Applications are due March 4.

  • Monitoring the school improvement plan—also known as their school’s CIWP.
  • Monitoring the school's budget and expenditures.
  • Evaluating their school’s principal annually, as well as selecting a new contract principal for their school or renewing the contract of their current principal.

Friends of Solomon School Parent Teacher Organization (FOSS PTO)
The Friends of Solomon School Parent Teacher Organization is a welcoming community for all Solomon parents and caregivers. Our mission is to create additional opportunities for student enrichment. If you'd like to join their mailing list to find out more, please fill out the FOSS PTO Contact Form.

Kudos to all of our Solomon community members that dined out in February to support our FOSS PTO. With the Jersey Mike's giveback in the books, bringing $600 back to our FOSS PTO, we were able to raise nearly $1,000 in restaurant givebacks alone this month!

Our next scheduled meeting is Wednesday, March 9, at 6pm. Topics will include getting organized for our annual Walk Jog Roll-a-thon and International Night.
Solomon COVID Status
Current Homerooms Flipped to Remote and Return Dates
There is 1 homeroom in the flipped to remote protocol, as of February 27.

As of February 27, we have 2 students quarantined due to positive tests, 0 staff members quarantined due to positive tests, and 4 students quarantined as non-vaccinated or partially-vaccinated close contacts.

All close contacts have been contacted by Principal Gamble via email. Fully vaccinated and students with documented positive COVID tests in the past 90 days report for in-person learning.

As of February 27, we have 156 out of 295 eligible students vaccinated, and 77 out of 353 eligible students signed up for weekly COVID testing.
Additional health and safety protocol reminders:

  • Please review the information at www.cps.edu/campaigns/covid-updates to make yourself aware of changes to quarantine policy, effective February 1, 2022.
  • If your child is displaying any COVID symptoms or not feeling well, please do not send them to school!
  • If your child is displaying any of these symptoms and does not come to school, they will need to have a negative COVID test or an alternative medical diagnosis from a doctor prior to returning to in-person learning.
  • Before coming to school each day, please self-administer these questions and follow the directions based on your responses.
  • If you are planning on traveling outside of Illinois, please review this district travel guidance for families, which may impact your return to in-person learning (unless you are vaccinated).
  • COVID testing happens at Solomon each week, usually Wednesdays between 1:00-3:30pm. It is a PCR test, and we get results back anywhere from 36 to 72 hours later via text and/or email.
  • For your child to be tested, we need to get your permission. You can give us your permission to test your child by completing the information at this link.
  • Positive tests that come about through the district testing are automatically reported to the district contact tracers. If you have a positive test (rapid, PCR, etc.) that you obtained on your own, you must report that positive result to cps.edu/covidresults as soon as you can so that the contact tracing process can begin.
  • In case a child is considered a close contact or an entire classroom is flipped to remote, a fully vaccinated student is able to continue reporting for in-person learning, assuming that they are asymptomatic, without any disruption. Additionally, any student that has a documented (cps.edu/covidresults) positive COVID case in the past 90 days will not have to quarantine either.
  • Families cannot upload vaccination cards to Aspen themselves. A copy of the card has to be brought to Solomon's main office. It can be dropped off during business hours (9am-4pm). If that is difficult, a copy can be emailed to the main office at ajtamborino@cps.edu and crgamble@cps.edu.
  • Please do not wait to turn in your child's vaccination card. It takes a day for our nurse to receive and review the information on the card, and then enter the card into Aspen. Additionally, our nurse is not at Solomon daily at this time. If we don't have it by the time your child's flip to remote email is sent, we will not be able to process it in time for your child to return to school the next day. Please plan ahead.
