Dear Solomon Family--

We are coming up to the end of the 2nd Quarter this week. Thursday is the final day of the quarter, with Friday serving as our quarterly School Improvement Day, a non-attendance day for students. Report cards will be sent home with students on Friday, February 4.

Our Friends of Solomon School Parent Teacher Organization has some updates, which you can find below. Be sure to check it out and put those restaurant giveback nights on your calendar!

News and Updates
Be on the lookout for one KN95 mask in your child's backpack on Monday. We will be distributing one mask per child, with the expectation that we will be receiving more for students and staff in February. Wearing these masks is not mandatory. Having a mask that is comfortable, well-fitting, and able to be worn all day long is most important. That said, the KN95 masks are more effective than cloth masks, and they are recommended.

Thank you to the parents who joined me for our virtual coffee with the principal on Thursday. Our focus was on health protocols and how we are keeping our students and staff safe. You can find the informational slide deck here and a recording of the meeting here.

This week we welcomed Ms. Alyssa O'Donnell as a new teacher in our Solomon community. Ms. O'Donnell is primarily supporting 1st grade, and we are excited for her to be working with our students. You can read her introduction to our community here. Welcome, Ms. O'Donnell!

With the exception of a Drama Club make-up session on February 1, this coming week will be the last one for the winter session of Before and After-School Clubs at Solomon. The spring session will resume in March, so look out for registration information in the coming weeks.

This week we started some mid-year assessments for students, including ACCESS for our English Language Learners in grades K-8 and the Star360 math and reading screeners for students in grades 3-8. We will be sending home print-outs of student reports home with report cards, for students that have taken the assessments, on February 4.

We are looking for spring CPS Score sports coaches. We are eligible to have 5th/6th and 7th/8th co-ed flag football and girls soccer, as well as 5th through 8th track and field. If you are interested in serving as a head coach or an assistant coach, please email our Athletic Director, Chris Martin, at or call our main office at 773-534-5226.
Friends of Solomon School Parent Teacher Organization (FOSSPTO)
The Friends of Solomon School Parent Teacher Organization is a welcome community for all Solomon parents and caregivers. Our mission is to create additional opportunities for student enrichment. If you'd like to join their mailing list to find out more, please fill out the FOSS PTO Contact Form.

We are hosting a number of events in the second half of our school year, starting with a series of restaurant givebacks in February...Takeout Tuesdays all month! The idea is simple--you get food from these restaurants, say you are with Solomon or show the flier, and our organization receives a donation from the restaurant. Everybody wins! Please put the following givebacks on your calendar for February 1 and February 8. Additional February restaurant givebacks to be shared soon!

Our next FOSS PTO meeting is scheduled for February 9 at 6pm, and you can attend virtually or in-person.

As of January 23, we have 126 out of 295 eligible students vaccinated, and 70 out of 355 eligible students signed up for weekly COVID testing.
Additional health and safety protocol reminders:

  • If your child is displaying any COVID symptoms or not feeling well, please do not send them to school!
  • If your child is displaying any of these symptoms and does not come to school, they will need to have a negative COVID test or an alternative medical diagnosis from a doctor prior to returning to in-person learning.
  • Before coming to school each day, please self-administer these questions and follow the directions based on your responses.
  • If you are planning on traveling outside of Illinois, please review this district travel guidance for families, which may impact your return to in-person learning (unless you are vaccinated).
  • COVID testing happens at Solomon each week, usually Wednesdays between 1:00-3:30pm. It is a PCR test, and we get results back anywhere from 36 to 72 hours later via text and/or email.
  • For your child to be tested, we need to get your permission. You can give us your permission to test your child by completing the information at this link.
  • Positive tests that come about through the district testing are automatically reported to the district contact tracers. If you have a positive test (rapid, PCR, etc.) that you obtained on your own, you must report that positive result to as soon as you can so that the contact tracing process can begin.
  • In case a child is considered a close contact or an entire classroom is flipped to remote, a fully vaccinated student is able to continue reporting for in-person learning, assuming that they are asymptomatic, without any disruption. Additionally, any student that has a documented ( positive COVID case in the past 90 days will not have to quarantine either.
  • Families cannot upload vaccination cards to Aspen themselves. A copy of the card has to be brought to Solomon's main office. It can be dropped off during business hours (9am-4pm). If that is difficult, a copy can be emailed to the main office at and
  • Please do not wait to turn in your child's vaccination card. It takes a day for our nurse to receive and review the information on the card, and then enter the card into Aspen. Additionally, our nurse is not at Solomon daily at this time. If we don't have it by the time your child's flip to remote email is sent, we will not be able to process it in time for your child to return to school the next day. Please plan ahead.
  • For community resources on student vaccinations, please click here. We will be hosting a second vaccination event at Solomon on January 31, and you can find more information and sign up for the event here.
