Dear Solomon Family--

Friday was a great day to be a Cougar, as we were all outside and walking, jogging, or rolling in support of additional playground improvements at Solomon. We still have time to collect those donations (via mybooster.com or in the envelopes shared last week), and we will soon inform everyone about our progress towards our goal of $20,000.

To our parents, grandparents, and guardians that volunteered--thank you! To our teachers who helped get the word out and created fun incentives for our students--thank you! To our students, who collected funds for our school and were the stars of the show--thank you! And to our Friends of Solomon School PTO, who coordinated all of this--thank you! We couldn't have done with this without you!

News and Updates
International Night (June 3, 6-8pm) is back! As a reminder, since it has been 3 years, on International Night we sell tickets that allow students, staff, parents, alumni, and members of our community to purchase yummy appetizers, entrees, and desserts from volunteers that evening, giving everyone an opportunity to taste the home-made cuisines of dozens of different cultures. For those in the know, it is a wonderful community building event that has great food. For those of us new to Solomon, we are excited to have you join this tradition. We serve food in the gym, and then we set up tables inside and outside of the building so that everyone can enjoy the food. Stay tuned for more information about tickets.

Speaking of food, join us for McTeacher's Night at our neighborhood McDonald's (3241 W. Peterson) on Wednesday, May 18, from 4:30-7:30pm. We did this pre-pandemic, and it was a very fun evening for students and staff. A portion of sales will go towards our Friends of Solomon School PTO, and you will get to see many of your Solomon staff working the counters and selling apple pies. We hope to see you there!

Our Scholastic Book Fair will be held in our lobby from Monday, May 16, to Thursday, May 19, during school hours. Many thanks to our Book Fair Coordinators, Ms. Coppa and Mrs. Wiviott, for making it happen! If you would like to preview the books for the Scholastic Book Fair or set up an e-wallet for your child, you can do that here. Let's get some new books that will help us keep reading through the summer!

On Wednesday and Thursday, May 18-19, Solomon will be holding its annual Office of Student Protection and Title IX (OSP) Sexual Misconduct, Title IX and Bias-based Behavior Student Training for all students. For more information about the training and learn about your opt-out options, please read this letter. Please reach out to Principal Gamble with any questions or concerns.

Please read this note from the district regarding the city moving to medium risk for COVID transmission. The district's current policies include strongly recommending masks and requiring unvaccinated students and staff who are exposed to COVID to work or learn from home for five days and mask in school for the next five days, and recommending getting vaccinated and boosted and signing up for weekly testing. Currently we have 2 staff positives, 0 student positives, and 0 students isolated as close contacts.

Calling all families interested in learning more about our Pre-Kindergarten program in room 108 with Ms. Coppa and Mrs. Wiviott. Our next Tot Time is scheduled for Thursday, May 19th at 4:30pm, and we hope to see you there. We will also open the door at 4:10pm for any parents and children who would like to shop at our Scholastic Book Fair. You can apply for admission to Solomon's half-day Pre-Kindergarten program at www.cps.edu/ChicagoEarlyLearning. Be sure to select Solomon as your first choice!

Solomon learned this weekend that a long-awaited construction project replacing our accessibility ramp outside of Door #1 (our main entrance) will take place between May 19 to June 5. I will discuss with staff that have students entering and exiting through Door 1 whether or not they will be impacted by the construction. If there are changes to our entry and exit procedures, that will be communicated by me via a newsletter update and the classroom teacher by mid-week. Thanks for your patience with the construction!

We have some additional Bernie's Book Bags in our lobby (very few for PK-1st grades, a lot more for 2nd through 6th grades) that can help supplement your child's summer reading goals. If you are interested, give us a call or stop by our main office, and we can send another bag home with your child.
Congratulations to Viviene in room 115 for winning the Agriculture in the Classroom's contest to design their bookmark for the 2022-2023 school year! Classmate Sarah was selected as a honorable mention as well. Kudos to both of our students! You can see their work, along with other Solomon students, in the video above.
