Dear Parents and Community--

It was great to welcome all of the students and staff back to Solomon on Friday. It was a difficult and emotional few weeks, and I want to thank all of our parents for demonstrating their PETER the Cougar traits--persevering by shifting schedules, showing teamwork by helping each other out with carpooling, babysitting, etc., and showing respect through coffee and cheers for our staff that advocated for the needs of all students in our district.

With coming back to school on Friday, we went ahead with previously-planned Halloween celebrations, and it brought festivity to our reunion. In planning for this first day back from the strike, I was reminded of the quote from basketball coach, Mike Krzyzewski,:

"You can see and you can listen, but you have to have moments in which you feel."

Days like Halloween are important for school culture because they are important to kids. As a parent and educator, we all know the joy our students (and ourselves!) derive in seeing others in costume and sharing with each other. And if it is important to our students, then we believe it has to be important to the adults that support them.
As a reminder, with the strike, 5 additional days have been added to the school year. This will have some impact on planned events at Solomon and district-wide. Once we know when those days are, it will be shared here, along with any schedule changes. See our calendar below for more information.
News and Notes
Fall sports update: Saturday's (November 2) volleyball game was cancelled by the district due to insufficient time to practice. An update about the remainder of the fall sports season is expected from the district shortly. Volleyball practices are scheduled to resume this week after school.

Winter sports update. Applications are due on November 8 for students interested in 5th/6th and 7th/8th Boys and Girls Basketball, as well as Co-Ed Wrestling. Please submit the application to the main office or to our Athletic Director, Mr. Martin. Contests start in early December.

Our Scholastic Book Fair is right around the corner! Set up starts on November 8 in our lobby, and then all of the following week (11/12-15) it will be open daily. Book Fair volunteers are needed to help set up on the 8th and staff the fair the following week; please click here to volunteer. A link to the online fair (November 3-16) is here. There, you can also find out information about the E-wallet system so that you don't have to send cash with your child!

Last year a parent asked for a copy of our assessment calendar for the year, based on a document she saw at another school. I thought it was a great idea, so I have created one for Solomon. Here you can find all the assessments (not including classroom end-of-unit quizzes and exams, or student progress monitoring) that we will be providing at Solomon this year, as well as the anticipated dates. Assessments like these help all of our instructors to make informed decisions about their curricula and supports for your child.

As part of the events leading up to our annual Veterans' Remembrance Day (November 14), we are starting our toiletries drive for veterans. Bring in any of your individually-packaged, travel-sized toiletries (deodorant, toothpaste, soap, etc.) to the box outside the main office starting this week. Collection runs from October 15 to November 14.

Due to the strike, the district-wide lunch menu (cps.edu/menu) will be inaccurate for the next two weeks, as the work stoppage impacted the delivery of goods. Students will still receive multiple hot and cold lunch options, and the regular menu should resume mid-month.

Before- and after-care with J at School: You can registration for before- and after-school care (7-9am, 4-6pm) with J at School here.
