Dear Parents and Community--

I am happy to share with our community that Solomon is once again a Level 1+ school in the district. For more information about how the district calculated SQRP (School Quality Report Policy), click here. Many factors contribute to our success, and one of the biggest is our staff and parent partnership. You will have an opportunity to meet with those staff members this coming Wednesday, November 13, between 11:00-2:30 and 3:15-6:00. The 2:30-3:15 time period will be for the staff lunch, at which time staff will be unavailable to conference.

We look forward to meeting with you on Wednesday, and I want to thank both our parents and our staff (and, of course, our students!) for working together to make us the pride of Peterson Park! Let's get 100% attendance on Wednesday!

Last, a big thank you to our veterans and actively serving members of our nation's military for your service on this Veterans' Day weekend. Please see below for more information about our veterans celebrations on Thursday.
News and Notes
Parent Portal/Aspen: Have you activated your Parent Portal account yet? Read more here! Need help logging into the Parent Portal? Click here for help! Doing that before the parent-teacher conferences on Wednesday will save you time. Feel free to stop or phone the main office during business hours (8:45-4:30) so that we can assist you.

Fall sports update: Congratulations to our girls 7/8 volleyball team for their victory this weekend. Next weekend, on November 16, the girls will have two games at Mather HS (1:30, 3:00). Good luck and finish strong!

Winter sports update. Applications were due last Friday, and we will be reaching out to students and families this week about which teams we will be able to field this winter, based on the number of applications we received (a minimum of 8 sign-ups is required to field a team).

This week is our Scholastic Book Fair, with the store open daily each day this week. A link to the online fair (November 3-16) is here. There, you can also find out information about the E-wallet system so that you don't have to send cash with your child! Find a book (or three) that your child can read on a cold weekend like this one!

As part of the events leading up to our annual Veterans' Remembrance Day (November 14), we are starting our toiletries drive for veterans. Bring in any of your individually-packaged, travel-sized toiletries (deodorant, toothpaste, soap, etc.) to the box outside the main office starting this week. Collection runs from October 15 to November 14.

Information about our drama program for grades 3-8 traveled home in backpacks last week, and you can find a digital copy of the flier here. Please return the interest form to the main office by November 27 so that you can secure your spot.

Congratulations to our 7th graders in 120 for having the best attendance in October, 98.2%. Additionally, great job for our students in 122 who showed the most improvement from September. The following homerooms were out of uniform on Thursday, November 7, as a result of surpassing our monthly goal of 96%: 102, 114, 115, 119, and 120.

Due to the strike, the district-wide lunch menu (cps.edu/menu) will be inaccurate for the next two weeks, as the work stoppage impacted the delivery of goods. Students will still receive multiple hot and cold lunch options, and the regular menu should resume November 18.

CPS announced this past week that, pending the CPS Board's approval later this month, the following days will be regular student attendance days:
Wednesday, November 27th
Thursday, January 2nd
Friday, January 3rd
Wednesday, June 17th
Thursday, June 18th

In addition to our recent School Quality Report Policy rating from the district, Solomon was recently given a "Commendable" rating from the state of Illinois. For more information, click here.

2020-2021 Elementary School Application
The GoCPS Elementary Application is now open. If you intend to have your child come to Solomon as a new student in the 2020-2021 school year AND you live outside the attendance boundary, you will need to submit an application via the Go CPS site. Siblings of current students who dwell outside the attendance boundary must apply to Solomon through this application. Similarly, students in our Pre-K (108) program that wish to attend Solomon and live outside of our attendance boundary must apply to Solomon as well.

The deadline for securing a pin that would allow you to apply is November 22, and the application deadline has been extended to December 13. Please see here for an FAQ on the application process and here for a note to sibling and pre-school families.
