Dear Parents and Community--

It has been a great first week at Solomon. In our back-to-school assemblies today, I told the students that the first day of school is one of my favorite days (if slightly nerve-wracking this year, due to the rain and indoor entry). We work so hard to build relationships with our students that allow them to feel supported while challenged. When we get to see them after a long break, we are eager to reconnect with them and continue the work moving forward.

Be sure to follow me on Twitter (@PrincipalGamble) so that you can see pictures and get updates about our work.
Friends of Solomon School-Parent Teacher Organization Updates
Membership for our Friends of Solomon School Parent Teacher Organization (affectionately called FOSSPTO) is now open. Please see the attached form or look for a paper copy via kidmail. We rely on parent leadership for our school to stay strong, and being a part of the organization is one way to contribute. The homeroom with the highest percentage of members will get an extra-special incentive!

Our first meeting of the year on Wednesday, September 18 at 6pm in our library. The year-long schedule will be shared by then. Attendance at the meetings is always welcomed but not required of our members.

At the September 18 meeting, we will be elected the officers of the organization, which are pivotal leadership positions we need to help set our direction and priorities. Everyone is welcome to attend and seek office, so we hope to see you there!
J at School Program Registration
  • Registration for before- and after-school care (7-9am, 4-6pm) with J at School, our provider for the past two years, is now open. Click here for online registration and here for a printable registration form. New this year: J at School will coordinate our enrichment programming, such as iCook, Young Rembrandts, and others, and registration for those programs will open later in the month.
  • Enrichment programming for this school year: The link at which families can register is jatschool.org/enrichment. In addition to our returning iCook and Young Rembrandts programming, we are adding another great new and requested program, Chess Scholars. All three of these programs will be administered by J at School this year, meaning that registration for each of them will be in the same place. Read more about the programs here. Programs will be cancelled due to low enrollment if necessary, so be sure to sign up this weekend if you are interested!
Entry and Dismissal Reminders
It was a pretty smooth first week, save the rain and indoor entry on Tuesday. Transportation for our students on buses is still pretty inconsistent with on-time performance, and we have been in communication with the Transportation Department all week to advocate for our needs.

Just a reminder about entry and exit logistics:

  • Grades Pre-K to 2 enter at Door 3 at 9 am. After 9:05 students should report to Door 1 on Hamlin.

  • Grades 3 to 8 enter at Door 6 at 9 am. After 9:05 students should report to Door 1 on Hamlin.

  • As a reminder, please avoid parking on Avers St. due to bus traffic.

  • Also, our staff lot should not be accessed by the community between 8:30-9:15, and then again from 3:30-4:15.

  • All parents should enter the building through Door #1 on Hamlin in order to enter the building. Always check in at the main office to receive a visitor's pass, and please be sure to escort your child to the main office to receive a tardy pass after 9:05.
News and Notes
  • Fall sports sign-up for grades 5-8 is now available online, in addition to paper copies provided to the students by our Athletic Director, Mr. Martin. The available sports are Boys Soccer, Girls Volleyball, Co-Ed 16" softball, and Boys and Girls Cross Country. Applications are due online or to our main office by Friday, September 20.

  • I'm sharing an updated letter with the community that was sent home to our 2nd grade parents regarding a teaching vacancy in that classroom. In this note we introduce our long-term substitute, Mrs. Lee. Please join me in welcoming her to Solomon!

  • In today's assemblies with students, as part of our welcome back to school, we reviewed school-wide expectations and the district's Student Code of Conduct. Your child should be bringing home a copy for you to see and sign. You can also find a digital copy of the SCC here.

  • Congratulations to our teachers Mrs. Gleeson and Mrs. Jones for having their Donors Choose projects funded. Through that support, "Make Math aMazing" and "Help Me Communicate with Parents in 24 Different Languages" were both funded. Thank you!

  • Similar to last year, if you would like to volunteer at Solomon this year, you must complete the district's volunteer application form, available here. If you applied and volunteered at Solomon last year, there is no additional action you need to take at this time--this is only for new volunteers and families new to Solomon.
