Dear Parents and Community--
The CTU and SEIU strike is over, and the entire Solomon staff is excited to welcome all of our students back tomorrow, Friday, November 1. Before and after school programming, including J at School, resumes their normal hours beginning tomorrow.
The regular newsletter will resume this weekend, but I have a few additional notes to share:
*We will do our Solomon Halloween celebrations on Friday, November 1. Students can come in costume on Friday, and we can celebrate the holiday and the second start of the school year. For guidance:
- Nut-free candy can be brought to school for trick-or-treat purposes. Students will exchange candy, healthier snacks alternatives, or trinkets (pencils, etc.) during a classroom trick-or-treat. Teachers will seal the bags after distribution so that students do not eat treats during the school day. This ensures that parents have discretion over what their child eats. There will not be any in-school consumption of treats. We will also kindly remind students not to litter on the playground after school.
- Parade schedule: PM PK through Grade 2 will have their parade around the building at 2pm. There won't be a morning parade in order to assist with re-entry. If a class is hosting a party, it should be held in the last academic period of the day; Essentials classes will not be cancelled that day.
Parents can come to take pictures of the parade from the lobby outside of the main office, and teachers have the discretion to invite parents to any classroom parties. NOTE: Parents that want to come into the school to observe or participate in party must have completed a volunteer application. Please go to cpsvolunteers.org and register as a Level II volunteer prior to 10/31 so that you can be confirmed.
- On costumes:
- Students should either wear their costume all day or have a costume they can put on themselves so that teachers are not required to assist.
- All costumes must be school-appropriate, which includes no masks, toy weapons, and fake blood.
*The terms of the agreement have not yet been shared. One piece that leaked out was about 5 make-up days to account for the strike. That will impact our school calendar in some way, but until we know when the days are, we will not alter our calendar. Any changes will be communicated via this newsletter, as well as updated on the Google calendar that can be found on solomon.cps.edu
*One change, for now: Tomorrow's prospective parent tour at 9:30 is cancelled. Our next tour is scheduled on December 6.
*I want to thank all of our families and community friends that have stopped by to support our amazing Solomon teachers and staff the past 11 days. I know that they wanted to be back in the classroom with your children, and your support helped keep them strong. What they fought for will help all of our students across the district. Tomorrow we get to come back together as a Solomon family, and I'm looking forward to getting back in our groove.
