News and Notes
Our Picture Re-take Day is scheduled on April 13, 2021. We have reached out to confirm times for those that submitted the online survey for preferred times, and that survey is closed. If you would like to still try to schedule a time for your remote learner to come into Solomon on April 13 for a picture re-take, please call the main office between 9am-4pm on Monday, April 12.

Friday, April 16, is a School Improvement Day, and there are no classes for students on that day. This day signals the end of our 3rd Quarter.

Parent Teacher Conference Day is scheduled for Wednesday, April 21. All conferences will be virtual, and they will be held between 11:00am-2:30pm and 3:15-6:00pm. Teachers will be sending out their invitations for conferences this week, so be on the lookout for a note on how you can sign up for a time to conference with your child's teachers. There are no classes that day for students. Please note: Report cards will NOT arrive in the mail prior to the conferences, so be sure to check Aspen before the conferences or ask at the conferences to see your child's grades.

This week we have our monthly Local School Council (LSC) and Friends of Solomon School Parent Teacher Organization meetings, and all parents and community members are invited to join us.

Title IX Training for Students
This is a message from CPS: With an ever changing education landscape, the safety of our Chicago Public Schools (CPS) students continues to be of the utmost importance. Earlier this year, our staff completed compliance training “Protecting Chicago’s Children”. These training sessions further ensure our staff remain vigilant about addressing any issues that could compromise the health and safety of your students. The next phase of the Office of Student Protection and Title IX’s commitment to this endeavor is providing training on preventing and reporting abuse to all K-12 CPS students. 

The Office of Student Protection and Title IX (OSP) Sexual Misconduct and Title IX Student Training covers the following 5 learning objectives in developmentally appropriate language:

  1. Students will understand CPS Title IX Policy and Discrimination Statement
  2. Students will know who the Title IX Coordinator is, what OSP does, and how to get in touch with OSP
  3. Students will understand what constitutes sexual harassment 
  4. Students will be aware of the resources available to students who report sexual harassment or retaliation, including interim measures pending an investigation
  5. Students will know what to do if they believe they or other students have been subjected to sexual harassment 

As a district, OSP has collaborated across a number of departments to create developmentally appropriate sessions that will allow students to identify abuse and empower them to report any wrong doing that may have occurred. The sessions have been broken down by PreK-3rd Grade, 4th-8th Grade, and 9th-12th Grade and are all around 30-45 minutes. 

Training for Solomon students will be with Mr. Gamble and the Solomon Student Support Team for thirty minutes on Wednesday, April 28th throughout the day. Teachers will communicate with students the time that students will need to login to attend the training.

Parents have the right to opt-out of the Office of Student Protection and Title IX Student Training. If you choose to opt your child out please email Principal Gamble at crgamble@cps.edu.

In-Person Learning Reminders
  • I would like to thank the parents that responded to the district Quarter 4 Intent to Return survey. I will be sending notes out to parents about their child's pod assignment on Monday, April 12. Please note that if your child is currently an in-person learner, his/her pod assignment will not change for the start of Quarter 4. Only parents of students that are returning the week of April 19 will receive that note.

  • Thank you to those who have submitted the consent form for student COVID testing. As a reminder, this is not required and there are no repercussions if you do not have your students tested. Students are only eligible for testing if they are 10 years and 1 day old or older and if they are in person on the day testing occurs. If you receive an email stating your student is being tested on their non-in person day, please disregard and do not bring your student to school to be tested.

  • All Solomon families should have received an email from CPS providing the option to give consent for testing electronically. Please see the email from CPS for further details.

  • The health screener needs to be taken for each student every day. If you are not receiving a personalized text, you can always complete the screener at cps.edu/healthscreener, and you will need to enter your child's CPS email address and birthdate.

  • If your child is feeling sick, PLEASE keep them at home for the safety of all students and staff. Students have the option to learn from home when they are not feeling well. If a student comes to school and exhibits any COVID-19 symptoms, they will be sent to the care room and then picked up by a parent. Students who are sent home after being in the care room are required to provide a doctor's note or negative COVID test clearing them for return.

  • Please review, print, sign, and return the student and parent Cougar Pledges. These behaviors will help keep our students and staff safe, and everyone contributes to our success!

Community Corner

All CPS students, regardless of income or citizenship status, are now eligible for food benefits as a result of the Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT). Student meals are available from the district on a grab-and-go basis. While Solomon is not a distribution site, neighboring schools Sauganash Elementary (6040 N. Kilpatrick) and Peterson Elementary (5510 N. Christiana) are both open daily between 8:00-1:00. For more information on the CPS Grab-and-Go Meal Sites, click here.

CIADC (Chicago Industrial Arts and Design Center) is excited to open up after school classes in all 4 Department shops, free for CPS students. Interested CPS students should complete this short form, and a CIADC staff member will contact them with instructions for free after school registration. For Saturday classes, students still have the option to apply for tuition assistance here. Their first Spring session begins the week of 3/29, and the second session begins the week of 5/10. Tuition assistance is available.

Ms. Jamie Olah, who has worked with our 7th graders in Ms. Liu's English Language Arts classes for many years, is offering virtual after school theater programming for elementary school-aged students. For more information, click here.
Solomon Spirit Wear
I am excited to announce that we have a new partner for Solomon spirit wear this year, SquadLocker. Great new gear--t-shirts, hoodies, sweatpants, shorts, polos, face masks...you name it. Peter the Cougar never looked so good. And, you can order at any time, and it will be delivered to your door. This replaces the once-a-year order that our staff and volunteers had previously organized in the building.
