Dear Solomon Family--

Let's celebrate the end of 2020 with a spirit week! See the graphic below for the daily details.

This will be the last regularly-scheduled newsletter of 2020, though I will be sure to update the community regarding our re-opening plans (see below for more information) as new information is available. To those who celebrate them, I wish you a happy holiday season. For all of our Solomon community, I say good riddance to 2020 and wish each of you a happy and healthy 2021!

In partnership,

Chris Gamble

School Re-opening Updates
  • As of now, our Pre-K and cluster program students are scheduled to return to Solomon, 5 days a week, starting January 11, 2021. All other K-8 students are scheduled, as of now, to return on February 1, 2021, and their hybrid schedule can be between 2-4 days per week, depending on a variety of factors that we will need to evaluate.

  • Illinois State Board of Education, Chicago Public Schools, and Chicago Department of Public Heath guidelines will inform all of our plans for instruction and the safety of students and staff when they return to the building. We prioritize the health and safety of our entire community in our decision making.

  • A recording this past week's parent town hall meeting regarding re-opening at Solomon is available here.

  • We will host our next town hall meeting, specific to Pre-K and Cluster student return, on Wednesday, January 6, at 5pm. We will record these meeting as well.
  • With students preparing to re-enter the building, I want to remind parents of the daily health requirements. Parents will need to complete the health screener daily (cps.edu/healthscreener) in order for their child to enter the building. In addition, parents should be mindful of Chicago's Emergency Travel Order as they prepare for any potential holiday travel. For this to work, everyone will have to do their part!

  • A link to all re-opening information from the district is available here, and a multi-page re-opening guidance document for parents is available here.
Applications for 2021-2022 School Year
January 8, 2021 is the NEW deadline for submitting applications on Go CPS, including our 8th graders applying for high school, Pre-Kindergarten students that live outside of our attendance boundaries and want to attend Solomon for Kindergarten, and any other non-Solomon students that live outside the attendance boundary and want to come to Solomon in grades K-8 in the 2021-2022 school year.

If you have any questions or need support with the process, please contact the Office of Access and Enrollment at 773-553-2060 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, or email gocps@cps.edu.
News and Notes

  • This winter, CPS will offer NWEA MAP Growth in-person testing for GoCPS considerations. Testing will take place from 1/11/21-1/15/21 at the schools where students are currently enrolled. Testing is restricted to students in 6th, 7th & 8th grades who have both submitted GoCPS applications for high school programs with academic criteria for the selection process and opt into winter testing. No other students should be tested in-person during the winter window. For more information about the testing protocols and to complete a survey on whether you would like your child to test at Solomon during the week of January 11, 2021, click here.

  • In a note for our 2nd grade parents, I would like to welcome Mrs. Gillian Barr to Solomon. Mrs. Barr will be serving as the classroom teacher for 2nd grade during Mrs. Werner's leave. We are excited not only for Mrs. Barr to join us, but also to meet the newest member of the Werner family!

  • Friday, December 18, is a day where we will be distributing a number of materials at Solomon to our families. Some teachers will have items and texts to go home with students, and...we will have a new Bernie's Book Bag delivery! Free sets of books for all of our students in grades Pre-K through 6th! Plan on stopping Solomon on 12/18 to get some goodies at Door #1!

Solomon Spirit Wear
I am excited to announce that we have a new partner for Solomon spirit wear this year, SquadLocker. Great new gear--t-shirts, hoodies, sweatpants, shorts, polos, face masks...you name it. Peter the Cougar never looked so good. And, you can order at any time, and it will be delivered to your door. This replaces the once-a-year order that our staff and volunteers had previously organized in the building.

Click here to see what is available now, and be the first on your block to represent Solomon in our new gear!
To have your email address added to this distribution list, please complete this form.

Newsletters are also available via our website, solomon.cps.edu. Newsletters are sent out weekly, with the exception of holiday and summer breaks.
