Dear Solomon Family--

It was wonderful to see students from our Pre-K and Cluster special education programs, as well as Solomon staff, this past week for in-person learning. See below for more reopening updates and other important school news.

I want to wish everyone a happy Lunar New Year, and I hope that you and your family are able to enjoy this Presidents' Day holiday. When I taught high school U.S. history, we celebrated Presidents' Day with an NCAA-style bracket to determine the "best" president in American history. Even with their considerable flaws, Presidents Washington and Lincoln still always made it to the "final four". Today we celebrate their birthdays.

It is expected to be a snowy Monday and Tuesday, so please keep an eye out for any announcements in the news or your email regarding school closures. I will send an additional email if any school closures are announced.

In partnership,

Chris Gamble

In-Person Learning Reminders
  • We are asking that students returning for in-person learning and their parents both complete "Cougar Pledges", in order to illustrate what we will need from everyone to have a successful re-entry. Please have your child return these (student and parent) on the first day of school.

  • Below are step-by-step directions to get your child(ren)'s health screener form sent directly to your phone each day for in-person learners. The screener must be completed each day before students are allowed to enter Solomon.

  • This letter details changes in school-wide procedures due to COVID-19 for all in-person learners.

  • K-5 students in our general education program will return to Solomon on March 1.

  • 6-8 students in our general education program will return to Solomon on March 8.

  • K-8 students in our general education program are divided into pods A and B. Pod A students will report on Mondays and Tuesdays, and Pod B students will report on Thursday and Fridays. Wednesdays is an all-remote day for these students. If you have any questions about which pod your child is in, please call our main office.
You can change your preferences in Aspen to receive personalized links for each child's daily health screener.

News and Notes
Thank you to everyone who voted for Solomon projects in the 39th Ward Participatory Budget balloting! I look forward to hearing soon about the outcome.

2nd Quarter report cards were printed and mailed by the district this past week, so they should be arriving at your address listed in Aspen this week.

We will sending out links to register for after-school programs and clubs later this week. These clubs and programs will be primarily remote and will run through the 2nd semester.

Will your child be in Kindergarten, 6th grade, or 9th grade during the 2021-2022 school year? As a reminder from our nurse, those students are expected to submit completed health forms and updated immunization records.
Solomon Calendar
The most up-to-date place where you can find important events at Solomon is our school website's homepage, solomon.cps.edu. Logins for each of the virtual meetings can be found in that same calendar. Additionally, please be mindful of the following upcoming events:

February 15: Presidents' Day (no school for staff or students)

March 1: K-5 grade students in the general education program resume in-person learning

March 8: 6-8 grade students in the general education program resume in-person learning

Student meals are available from the district on a grab-and-go basis. While Solomon is not a distribution site, neighboring schools Sauganash Elementary (6040 N. Kilpatrick) and Peterson Elementary (5510 N. Christiana) are both open daily between 8:00-1:00. For more information on the CPS Grab-and-Go Meal Sites, click here.

CIADC (Chicago Industrial Arts and Design Center) is starting a new session of Industrial Arts classes in our Youth Pathways Program the week of February 8. Students still have time to register and to take advantage of our needs-based Tuition Assistance. We have extremely small classes and stringent Health Safety protocols. For more information about their program for students in grades 6-9, click here.

Registration is open for baseball and softball at Gompers Park through February 21. For more information, click here.

The 17th District Community Policing Office is hosting the "Change the World" virtual youth event on Tuesday, February 23, at 3:30pm. For more information on the event, click here. To register, click here.

Next in our district's Ask the Expert series, our Chief Equity Officer, Dr. Maurice Swinney, will discuss how CPS is leading with equity during the pandemic on Thursday, February 18. For more information and to register, click here.
Solomon Spirit Wear
I am excited to announce that we have a new partner for Solomon spirit wear this year, SquadLocker. Great new gear--t-shirts, hoodies, sweatpants, shorts, polos, face masks...you name it. Peter the Cougar never looked so good. And, you can order at any time, and it will be delivered to your door. This replaces the once-a-year order that our staff and volunteers had previously organized in the building.

Click here to see what is available now, and be the first on your block to represent Solomon in our new gear!
To have your email address added to this distribution list, please complete this form.

Newsletters are also available via our website, solomon.cps.edu. Newsletters are sent out weekly, with the exception of holiday and summer breaks.
