Dear Solomon Family--

I am wishing everyone in our Solomon family well this weekend. Please take a few minutes to read our announcements below, as we prepare reopening for our students in grades K-5 on March 1. As a reminder this week for students in our K-5 general education program: their teachers come back to Solomon on Monday, February 22, to start getting rooms ready, so there may be different schedules this week as asynchronous time is repurposed as additional teacher prep time. Please be on the lookout for an email or a Google Classroom announcement from your child's teacher about any schedule changes for remote learning this week.

For all students, we will transition to a new remote schedule that will complement our in-person learning schedule starting March 1. This new March 1 schedule should carry us through the rest of the year, fingers crossed!

Last, I want to personally thank everyone that took the time to vote for Solomon projects in the 39th Ward Participatory Budgeting ballot. While we were successful in winning the mural creation project along with other 39th Ward schools, we were not able to secure funding for our playground enhancements through the ballot. To learn more about what was selected in the ballot, you can visit Alderman Nugent's website here.

We are committed to continuing to work with our district and community representatives to find funding that will allow us to make those playground improvements. In the meantime, we are excited to work with Green Star Movement on our exterior mural project. We will hold our first community input meeting later this spring, so stay tuned!

News and Notes
Sign-up for our free after-school virtual clubs and programs is now open! Clubs and programs start the week of March 1. These clubs and programs are run by Solomon staff. You can see what programming is available for grades K-8 in our "at-a-glance" document, and after you read about program requirements there, you can sign up here.

Picture Day is coming on March 1. I will share a special communication about Picture Day procedures for all students in a separate email early this week. All students in grades Pre-K through 8th grade will have the opportunity to have their pictures taken in a space that allows for maximum social distancing, and our 8th graders will be taking their graduation photos. If you are unable to attend on March 1, picture re-take day is currently scheduled for April 13.

We are celebrating Black History Month at Solomon this week with a spirit week! In addition to the learning in classrooms this month, this spirit week is opportunity to celebrate the legacy of Black Americans in our nation's history.

The annual Jean Baptiste Pointe DuSable Essay Commemoration Writing Competition is now open through March 12. This writing contest, which commemorates the first immigrant and modern day founder of Chicago, is open to all students in grades 3-5, and students can learn more about the contest and the prizes here.

Congratulations to our 3rd-8th grade student winners of the Academic Excellence, Peter the Cougar, and Perfect Attendance awards for quarter 2! Last week we started sharing certificates with winners via their email accounts, so be on the lookout for those. As a reminder, our Academic Excellence award goes to students that have all As and Bs on their Q2 report cards. The Peter the Cougar award is for students that show exemplary social and emotional learning skills and have no "checks" or "minuses" on the SEL competencies of their Q2 report card. Last, Perfect Attendance is for...having perfect attendance in Q2! Way to go, Cougars!
In-Person Learning Reminders
  • An observation from pick-up and drop-off this week: Parents, please help us model expectations for students by practicing social distancing when on campus for pick-up and drop-off. Thank you!

  • We are asking that students returning for in-person learning and their parents both complete "Cougar Pledges", in order to illustrate what we will need from everyone to have a successful re-entry. Please have your child return these (student and parent) on the first day of school.

  • Below are step-by-step directions to get your child(ren)'s health screener form sent directly to your phone each day for in-person learners. The screener must be completed each day before students are allowed to enter Solomon.

  • This letter details changes in school-wide procedures due to COVID-19 for all in-person learners.

  • K-5 students in our general education program will return to Solomon on March 1.

  • 6-8 students in our general education program will return to Solomon on March 8.

  • K-8 students in our general education program are divided into pods A and B. Pod A students will report on Mondays and Tuesdays, and Pod B students will report on Thursday and Fridays. Wednesdays is an all-remote day for these students. If you have any questions about which pod your child is in, please call our main office.
You can change your preferences in Aspen to receive personalized links for each child's daily health screener.

Solomon Spirit Wear
I am excited to announce that we have a new partner for Solomon spirit wear this year, SquadLocker. Great new gear--t-shirts, hoodies, sweatpants, shorts, polos, face masks...you name it. Peter the Cougar never looked so good. And, you can order at any time, and it will be delivered to your door. This replaces the once-a-year order that our staff and volunteers had previously organized in the building.

Click here to see what is available now, and be the first on your block to represent Solomon in our new gear!
