Dear Solomon Family--

In sum, it has been a very positive week. First, to be able to see our students in person has lifted our spirits. Even from behind the masks, we can feel those smiles. Second, the way that our staff has rallied around your children, to provide them the safe and secure environments they need right now, is amazing. Doing school this way has been very different, frustrating and anxiety-producing at times, yet our staff is doing everything we can in these unprecedented times. We are grateful that you trust us with your kiddos.

Thank you to all of our parents that submitted their student pod preference forms by January 15. This survey was only for parents that have elected to send their child(ren) back to Solomon on February 1, which is what the district refers to as "wave 2".

We have one more brief survey for our wave 2 families. We would like to be able to host our J at School before and after school care programs, and we need to see if there is enough interest to have a viable program. I am asking families that would be interested in before (7:00-9:00) and/or after (4:00-6:00) care to respond to this one-minute survey.

Important Back to School Reminders
Wearing a mask throughout the day is hard for both our students and staff, and yet it is a necessity for everyone's safety. Our expectation is that your child comes to school with at least one clean one each day. You can also assist us by making mask wearing a routine in your house, as well as reading social stories (like this one) with your child about the importance of wearing a mask and wearing it the right way. Everyone's safety depends on it!

Health screeners need to be completed daily before the child enters the building. Next week, now that most of our wave 1 parents have the hang of it, we will begin keeping students outside until it can be demonstrated that the screener has been completed for the child. Once again, this is an issue of the collective safety for our students and staff.

Teachers continue to monitor student attendance during each synchronous remote learning and in-person session, and our main office will adjust attendance throughout the day based on that. It is vital that your child is in class on time and throughout the duration of the day. If technology is preventing your child from accessing class, please call the main office for assistance. If your child is going to be absent, we ask that you continue to follow routine attendance procedure by calling the main office (773-534-5226, option 2). An email is not considered a valid submission and will not be accepted to excuse an absence. When leaving a phone message for our main office on your child's absence, please include the following:
  1. Student first and last name
  2. The date of your child's absence
  3. If not a full day absence, the length of time for the absence
  4. The reason for the absence
  5. Your full name (you must be listed as a parent or legal guardian in the student's records)
  6. Your contact number
As a reminder, here is the district's list of excused absences.

If you are picking your child up from school early, please call the main office so that we can arrange the pick-up at the child's assigned door.

Now that we are back in the building, we have a few reminders about driving near Solomon:
  • Please do not use the staff lot off of Avers unless you have prior approval from administration.
  • Please do not park on the school side of the street, where there are "No Parking During School Days" signs, unless you have prior approval from administration.
School Reopening Updates
  • Wave 1 students (Pre-K and Cluster program students) attend school at Solomon 5 days a week.

  • Wave 2 students (K-8 general education) will begin attending school at Solomon 2 days a week starting February 1.

  • Wave 2 students will be split into A and B pods, with "A" students coming to Solomon on Mondays and Tuesday, and "B" students coming to Solomon on Thursdays and Fridays. An announcement regarding your child's pod will be sent to you on Wednesday, January 20.

  • Wednesdays will be all-remote for all wave 2 students at this time.

News and Notes
We currently have a 95.2% success rate with students turning in all of their required medical documentation. If you have received notification from our school nurse, Ms. Levin, about turning in those documents, there still is time to submit your physical examinations and vaccination records. The fastest way is to have your doctor's office fax it to us at 773-534-5167; you can also place records in our lock-box located outside of Door #1.

While we are still working through whether we will be able to offer before and after school care for in-person learners at Solomon starting February 1, I am excited to announce that we have qualified for a grant from the district's OST (Out of School Time) office that will allow us to host some digital clubs and potentially some in-person clubs for students at Solomon during the second semester. Stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks!

We offer the Seal of Biliteracy Assessment for 5th and 8th grade students that can demonstrate competency in our world languages program, which for us is Mandarin instruction. If you are interested in learning more about this assessment, please reach out to our Mandarin instructor, Mrs. Ranquist, at mranquist@cps.edu.

We have staff available from 9:00-4:00 daily to assist you with any technology needs that you have. Please reach us at 773-534-5226 for assistance, or stop by Door #1 if you require in-person help.

Solomon Calendar

Community Corner
Student meals are available from the district on a grab-and-go basis. While Solomon is not a distribution site, neighboring schools Sauganash Elementary (6040 N. Girl Scout Cookie Sales End Wednesday 1/20/20! Help support our 1st grade Daisy and 2nd grade Brownie Girl Scout troops. They are fundraising for the upcoming year's activities with their annual Girl Scout cookie sales. Orders placed before 1/20/2020 in the neighborhood can be delivered directly to your door! Solomon Spirit Wear
I am excited to announce that we have a new partner for Solomon spirit wear this year, SquadLocker. Great new gear--t-shirts, hoodies, sweatpants, shorts, polos, face masks...you name it. Peter the Cougar never looked so good. And, you can order at any time, and it will be delivered to your door. This replaces the once-a-year order that our staff and volunteers had previously organized in the building.
