Dear Solomon Family--

This past week we hosted two reopening meetings for parents of our students in wave two (our K-8 general education program). Thank you to the 50 or so parents that joined us. I am attaching here a link to a video recording of Thursday's evening meeting, as well as the presentation slides.

Additionally, I am holding office hours for any parent or staff member that wants to ask any questions about the reopening process. You can hop on a video or audio call with me at any of these times:

Of course you are free to call the main office (773-534-5226) or email me (crgamble@cps.edu) at any time!

Additionally, I have some great news to share with our community. The district has submitted plans for construction inside Solomon to address our space utilization concerns--namely, the location of our music classroom within our lobby and need for private classroom and clinician spaces. With the reopening priorities, the timing is poor, but we are working with a timeline set by the district. We are hosting a community meeting for interested parents to hear about the proposal and provide feedback.

Last, CPS-CTU negotiations on reopening continue. The schedules for Monday and Tuesday look to be set for both our in-person and remote learners. Please keep an eye for updates in the news or from the district if there are any changes for later this week. As a reminder, for any in-person learner that does not come into the building, for whatever reason, remote learning is available as scheduled. I will continue to update the community as I learn new information.

Chris Gamble

In-Person Learning Reminders
Wearing a mask throughout the day is hard for both our students and staff, and yet it is a necessity for everyone's safety. Our expectation is that your child comes to school with at least one clean one each day. You can also assist us by making mask wearing a routine in your house, as well as reading social stories (like this one) with your child about the importance of wearing a mask and wearing it the right way. Everyone's safety depends on it!

Health screeners need to be completed daily before the child enters the building. Next week, now that most of our wave 1 parents have the hang of it, we will begin keeping students outside until it can be demonstrated that the screener has been completed for the child. Once again, this is an issue of the collective safety for our students and staff.

  • Every morning, parents and guardians will receive a text message (if they have opted to receive CPS text message notifications) with a unique link to their student’s health screener with pre-populated student information. If you do not receive a unique link via text message, you can access the health screener form at cps.edu/healthscreener. Please note that you will need to know either your student’s ID number or CPS email address along with their date of birth — contact your school if you do not know this information.

  • To ensure you receive a unique screener link for your child each morning , you can opt-in to receive CPS text messages and social media notifications by completing the School Messaging Consent Forms below - you can submit the form in-person or via email (form in English and Spanish).

Teachers continue to monitor student attendance during each synchronous remote learning and in-person session, and our main office will adjust attendance throughout the day based on that. It is vital that your child is in class on time and throughout the duration of the day. If technology is preventing your child from accessing class, please call the main office for assistance. If your child is going to be absent, we ask that you continue to follow routine attendance procedure by calling the main office (773-534-5226, option 2). An email is not considered a valid submission and will not be accepted to excuse an absence. When leaving a phone message for our main office on your child's absence, please include the following:
  1. Student first and last name
  2. The date of your child's absence
  3. If not a full day absence, the length of time for the absence
  4. The reason for the absence
  5. Your full name (you must be listed as a parent or legal guardian in the student's records)
  6. Your contact number
As a reminder, here is the district's list of excused absences.

If you are picking your child up from school early, please call the main office so that we can arrange the pick-up at the child's assigned door.

Now that we are back in the building, we have a few reminders about driving near Solomon:
  • Please do not use the staff lot off of Avers unless you have prior approval from administration.
  • Please do not park on the school side of the street, where there are "No Parking During School Days" signs, unless you have prior approval from administration.
School Reopening Updates
  • Wave 1 students (Pre-K and Cluster program students) attend school at Solomon 5 days a week.

  • Wave 2 students (K-8 general education) will begin attending school at Solomon 2 days a week starting February 1.

  • Wave 2 students will be split into A and B pods, with "A" students coming to Solomon on Mondays and Tuesday, and "B" students coming to Solomon on Thursdays and Fridays. Parents and students received emails from me on Wednesday, January 20, about their pod assignment. Please reach out to the main office if you are unsure which pod your child is in.

  • Wednesdays will be all-remote for all wave 2 students at this time.

  • Families will receive updated daily schedules, both in-person and remote, from their child's homeroom teacher no later than Friday, January 29.

  • Your child's teacher may also update you about schedule changes for this coming week no later than 5pm on Sunday, either via email or your child's Google Classroom page. The reason is that wave 2 (grades K-8 in general education) are scheduled to arrive in the building on Monday, January 25, and the district has directed staff to use all of its asynchronous instructional time as additional preparatory time to get classrooms ready for students.

  • A link to all re-opening information from the district is available here, and a multi-page re-opening guidance document for parents is available here.

News and Notes
As of this moment, we have insufficient interest in before- and after-school care to be able to offer our J at School child care program for in-person learners. We will survey parents again during the 3rd Quarter to see if we will be able to offer it during the 4th Quarter.

We offer the Seal of Biliteracy Assessment for 5th and 8th grade students that can demonstrate competency in our world languages program, which for us is Mandarin instruction. If you are interested in learning more about this assessment, please reach out to our Mandarin instructor, Mrs. Ranquist, at mranquist@cps.edu.
Technology Assistance
We have staff available from 9:00-4:00 daily to assist you with any technology needs that you have. Please reach us at 773-534-5226 for assistance, or stop by Door #1 if you require in-person help.

Need more information on technology and CPS accounts? Click here for a link to district resources. You can also reach out to the district's Parent Tech Help Line at 773-417-1060 for technical assistance.

Solomon Calendar
The most up-to-date place where you can find important events at Solomon is our school website's homepage, solomon.cps.edu. Logins for each of the virtual meetings can be found in that same calendar. Additionally, please be mindful of the following upcoming events:

January 25-29: Change in remote learning schedule for K-8 in preparation for reopening

January 27: Community Space Utilization Feedback Session, 6:00pm

February 1: K-8 students (wave 2) students return to Solomon for hybrid schedule

February 5: School Improvement Day (no school for students)
Community Corner
Student meals are available from the district on a grab-and-go basis. While Solomon is not a distribution site, neighboring schools Sauganash Elementary (6040 N. Kilpatrick) and Peterson Elementary (5510 N. Christiana) are both open daily between 8:00-1:00. For more information on the CPS Grab-and-Go Meal Sites, click here.

CIADC (Chicago Industrial Arts and Design Center) is starting a new session of Industrial Arts classes in our Youth Pathways Program the week of February 8. Students still have time to register and to take advantage of our needs-based Tuition Assistance. We have extremely small classes and stringent Health Safety protocols. For more information about their program for students in grades 6-9, click here.

Registration is open for baseball and softball at Gompers Park through February 21. For more information, click here.
Solomon Spirit Wear
I am excited to announce that we have a new partner for Solomon spirit wear this year, SquadLocker. Great new gear--t-shirts, hoodies, sweatpants, shorts, polos, face masks...you name it. Peter the Cougar never looked so good. And, you can order at any time, and it will be delivered to your door. This replaces the once-a-year order that our staff and volunteers had previously organized in the building.

Click here to see what is available now, and be the first on your block to represent Solomon in our new gear!
To have your email address added to this distribution list, please complete this form.

Newsletters are also available via our website, solomon.cps.edu. Newsletters are sent out weekly, with the exception of holiday and summer breaks.
