Dear Solomon Family--

First, I want to wish our Solomon dads a Happy Father's Day. Thank you for all that you do for our kiddos!

This past week was an exciting one for all of our Solomon students. Of course last week was graduation week for our 8th graders in the Class of 2021. They celebrated together for the first time in 15 months at our 8th grade luncheon last Wednesday, and it was a highlight of the year. They are a great, resilient group that has persevered during a challenging year. As they transition to Lane Tech, Von Steuben, Mather, CICS Northtown, Loyola Academy, Northside Learning Center, Amundsen, Taft, Noble Academy, Niles North, Sullivan, Buffalo Grove, and Oswego East, I know that they will take the lessons they have learned at Solomon and go far!

Additionally, we had a few Field Days last week to get our Pod A and B students outside, working and playing together. We weren't able to do all of our end-of-year activities, but our successful end of the year gives us some positive momentum to what we hope will be a fun and action-filled 2021-2022 school year.

Please read below for all of the end-of-year updates that you will need to get ready for the 2021-2022 school year.

This will be the last regular newsletter of the school year. Regular updates will resume in late July, about a month before the school year starts, though I will be sure to update the community if any big news pops up.

As I wrap up my sixth year as the principal of Hannah G. Solomon Elementary School, I want to thank you for allowing me to serve this community. I am excited for what the new school year will hold for all of us!

The week ahead

  • During the last week of school (Monday, June 21, and Tuesday, June 22), we are going to have a small schedule change. Monday, June 21, will stay a day of in-person attendance for our Pod A students. Tuesday, June 22, we are going to ask our Pod B students to attend in-person learning that day. That way, in this last week, we will be able to see all of our in-person learners.

  • We will be collecting Solomon-issued Chromebooks and iPads from all students that have borrowed devices for remote learning. Anyone who collected a device in March 2020 or afterwards, we are going to ask families to return those devices between Monday, June 21, and Thursday, June 24, between the hours of 9:00-4:00 at Door #1. This will allow our technology coordinator to ensure devices are in working order for the start of the 2021-2022 school year.

  • The main office will close on Friday, June 26, and it will reopen on Tuesday, July 5. Summer hours for our main office are 9:30-12:30 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. The main office will resume daily operations from 9:00-4:00 on August 18. Due to construction (see below), the best way to get a hold of the main office during those times is to call (773) 534-5226 or ring the doorbell at Door #1.   • Construction will be happening at Solomon from Wednesday, June 23, through Friday, August 20. As a result, the building will be closed through the entire summer. The construction crew will be using our parking lot as a staging ground, so we ask that community members do not use the parking lot during the summer. When students return on August 30, they will see a new music classroom, a number of new resource and collaboration spaces, a redesigned lobby designed for multiple uses, and some classroom changes between staff. We can't wait to see the final result!
Solomon Summer Camp
I am pleased to announce that we will be able to offer Solomon Summer Camp to students currently in grades K through 7th. We are able to offer this programming as a result of federal money provided to schools in Chicago Public Schools to ensure that students stay engaged in learning this summer.

Details:

When:
  • 2 weeks in July (Monday through Thursday): July 19-22 and July 26-29
  • 9am-11:50am each day

What:
  • It will be a rotation of classes where each student group will receive reading, arts, and sports enrichment programming. Programs will be led by Solomon staff.
  • The courses are:

Reading Enrichment with Mrs. Sartain: A series of well planned learning experiences focusing on the love of reading through read alouds and writing prompts. Students will be exposed to engaging texts and discuss these stories focusing on the main comprehension strategies: Making Connections, Inferring, Visualizing, Asking Questions, Determining Importance, Synthesizing, Monitoring Understanding, and Using Fix-Up Strategies.  

Music and Art Enrichment with Mrs. Stirling: This class offers choice-based activities that focus on music and visual arts integrated activities to inspire fun & creativity! 

Sports Skills with Mr. Delgado: Students would participate in activities that focus on building communication, teamwork, leadership and confidence. Students will work on developing and improving these skills through sports and free play.

Who:
  • Students in grades K through 7th are eligible to sign up. The courses will be split into primary, intermediate, and upper groups, with exact grade levels to be determined by the distribution of those who sign up.
  • Students can sign up for only one week so that we can accommodate as many Solomon students as possible.
  • Class sizes are currently capped at 15 students.

How:
  • All classes will be held outside on Solomon's campus, due to onsite construction through the summer. Students will have access to a bathroom inside the building. We will be developing an inclement weather plan and share with enrolled families prior to the start of programming.
  • There is no cost for this programming.

For your next steps, if you are interested in signing up your child for this program, please complete this form no later than Tuesday, June 22. Signing up is not a confirmation of being enrolled in Solomon Summer Camp. A confirmation of enrollment in Solomon Summer Camp will come no later than Thursday, June 24. Students that are not enrolled will be placed onto a waitlist that we will update through the summer.

This is a first-time endeavor for us, and we are excited about a different way to engage with our students over the summer. Plus, it gives students more opportunities to socialize in person. This camp is highly recommended for students that did not participate in in-person learning at Solomon this year. All current health and safety protocols currently in place will apply for the summer camp. Getting Ready for the 2021-2022 School Year

We are hopeful that with different COVID protocols next year, that we will be able to resume school tours. As a result, we will be putting the following dates on our community calendar for school tours. All tours begin at 9:30am, starting from our main office. Health screeners and masks may be required, per any district rules that might be announced for the 2021-2022 school year.

  • Friday, December 3

Supply lists for our general education homerooms are available to be ordered through Teacher Tailored. Click here to order your kit. If you order online through June 25, those supplies will be delivered to your home by August 27. You can also choose to purchase the items from the list on your own as well. If you purchase through Teacher Tailored, a portion of the sales come back to our Friends of Solomon School Parent Teacher Organization. A hard copy of our school supply lists will be posted to our school website later this week, in case you don't want to buy through Teacher Tailored.

Supply drop-off and open house with Solomon staff will be held on Thursday, August 26, at 3pm. Use this opportunity to meet your child's classroom teacher and drop off any school supplies prior to the first day of school.

We are excited to announce that we will be partnering with our friends from J at School for before and after school care at Solomon next year. The logistics will still need to be worked out as we see what the district requirements will be for the 2021-2022 school year, and we will be sharing a Solomon-specific registration form later in the summer. Community Corner
On June 27 at 2pm, State Senator Villivalam will provide updates from the Springfield Legislative Session, receive feedback, and answer questions on a variety of issues including the budget, statewide capital plan, energy legislation, COVID-19 pandemic related constituent services, and more. Student meals are available from the district on a grab-and-go basis. While Solomon is not a distribution site, neighboring schools Sauganash Elementary (6040 N. Solomon Spirit Wear
I am excited to announce that we have a new partner for Solomon spirit wear this year, SquadLocker. Great new gear--t-shirts, hoodies, sweatpants, shorts, polos, face masks...you name it. Peter the Cougar never looked so good. And, you can order at any time, and it will be delivered to your door. This replaces the once-a-year order that our staff and volunteers had previously organized in the building.
