Dear Solomon Family--

I hope that everyone was able to get outside and enjoy the beautiful weather this weekend. Nothing beats spring in Chicago.

We have a regular week of school this week, and our Spring Break will be March 29 through April 2. Classes resume on April 5. This will be the final newsletter until we return from Spring Break.

If you are going to be traveling for Spring Break, please review the district's travel guidance, which includes the requirements for returning to the classroom after travel.

In partnership,

Chris Gamble
Principal
Hannah G. Solomon Elementary School
News and Notes
The University of Chicago's 5Essentials survey will be administered to students in grades 4-8 during remote learning on Wednesday, March 24. Information about parent surveys will be shared after April 1. Schools strong on at least 3 of the 5 essential elements (ambitious instruction, involved families, supportive environment, collaborative teachers, and effective leaders) were at least 10 times more likely to improve student growth in test scores. We also use the data to help determine our school-wide academic and social-emotional learning supports. Parents will have their opportunity to complete these surveys after April 1, with more information to come.

This is our last call for after-school club sign-up. We have several of our clubs up and running, and a few will be cancelled if there is not additional enrollment by the end of the day on Monday, March 22. Clubs at risk for cancellation are our We Are Ready, Tutoring, and the 6th-8th grade Health and Wellness courses. You can see what programming is available for grades K-8 in our "at-a-glance" document, and after you read about program requirements there, you can sign up here.

We have been notified by the district that CPS schools will be administering the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) for students in grades 3-8, the alternative assessment for 3rd-8th grade students in our cluster program (DLM), the English language assessment for our English-as-a-Second-Language students in grades K-8 (ACCESS), and our Kindergarten assessment (KIDS). All assessments will be completed this spring, with more information to come on the logistics. NWEA will not be administered in the spring, and the district will be sharing modified promotion criteria this spring.

Per CPS policy, the use of school playground equipment is now permitted. For more guidance on the health and safety protocols for school playgrounds, click here.

As a reminder, the parking lot on Avers is reserved for staff.
In-Person Learning Reminders

  • Thank you to all of our families that responded to the Quarter 4 Intent to Return survey and our own Solomon scheduling survey. We will be getting out Quarter 4 pod information to families after Spring Break.

  • The health screener needs to be taken for each student every day. If you are not receiving a personalized text, you can always complete the screener at cps.edu/healthscreener, and you will need to enter your child's CPS email address and birthdate.

  • If your child is feeling sick, PLEASE keep them at home for the safety of all students and staff. Students have the option to learn from home when they are not feeling well. If a student comes to school and exhibits any COVID-19 symptoms, they will be sent to the care room and then picked up by a parent. Students who are sent home after being in the care room are required to provide a doctor's note or negative COVID test clearing them for return.

  • Please review, print, sign, and return the student and parent Cougar Pledges. These behaviors will help keep our students and staff safe, and everyone contributes to our success!

For Saturday classes, students still have the option to apply for tuition assistance here. Their first Spring session begins the week of 3/29, and the second session begins the week of 5/10. They also have Spring Break Camp available, 3/29-4/2, for students in grades 6-9. Tuition assistance is available for camp, as well.

Solomon Spirit Wear
I am excited to announce that we have a new partner for Solomon spirit wear this year, SquadLocker. Great new gear--t-shirts, hoodies, sweatpants, shorts, polos, face masks...you name it. Peter the Cougar never looked so good. And, you can order at any time, and it will be delivered to your door. This replaces the once-a-year order that our staff and volunteers had previously organized in the building.

Click here to see what is available now, and be the first on your block to represent Solomon in our new gear!
To have your email address added to this distribution list, please complete this form.

Newsletters are also available via our website, solomon.cps.edu. Newsletters are sent out weekly, with the exception of holiday and summer breaks.
