Dear Solomon Family--

This week our 7th graders in Ms. Liu's English Language Arts/Social Studies class will be presenting their Our American Voice (OAV) Community Action project. In the words of Ms. Liu:

"Solomon Elementary School’s 7th grade students are reading a book titled, This Book is Anti-Racist by Tiffany Jewel. As Common Sense Media states, “This is a tough, in your face, stand up and be heard book that challenges the idea that young readers (even those in grade school) can't make a difference in the fight against racism.” For this year’s OAV Community Action project we want to apply our learning to our school community and work together to take actions against racial hatred, bias, systemic racism and the oppression of marginalized groups. Part of our school’s Continuous Improvement Work Plan (CIWP) is to tackle the systemic injustices of racism and provide students with ways to take action and respond."

Hate has no home in our school and in the Peterson Park community, and our students are taking the lead in bringing put these values into practice. Please join me in wishing our students luck with presenting their findings to other schools participating in the OAV program and in working together to keep our community safe from hate.

In partnership,

Chris Gamble

News and Notes

Please share the word with families in our community!

In-Person Learning Reminders

  • Changes in protocols (entry, dismissal, lunch, etc.) are all detailed in this letter. Please review before returning to in-person learning.

  • The health screener needs to be taken for each student every day. If you are not receiving a personalized text, you can always complete the screener at, and you will need to enter your child's CPS email address and birthdate.

  • If your child is feeling sick, PLEASE keep them at home for the safety of all students and staff. Students have the option to learn from home when they are not feeling well. If a student comes to school and exhibits any COVID-19 symptoms, they will be sent to the care room and then picked up by a parent. Students who are sent home after being in the care room are required to provide a doctor's note or negative COVID test clearing them for return.

  • If you are looking to travel between now and the end of the school year, please review the district's travel guidance for families document.

  • Please review, print, sign, and return the student and parent Cougar Pledges. These behaviors will help keep our students and staff safe, and everyone contributes to our success!
