Dear Solomon Family--

This week, May 3-7, is Solomon Teacher and Staff Appreciation week. Each day this week we will be sharing our gratitude with our entire staff in different ways. As parents and community members, there are ways that you can show your gratitude as well. Please see this flier for ways that you can contribute.

The pandemic has been a struggle unlike any other, and one source of consistency and normalcy has been our teachers and staff. The supports look a lot different with remote learning and socially-distant classrooms, but our staff has been there, adapting their own practices to this new environment. While I always strive to be appreciative of the work our staff does each day, seeing them work and support their families and community the past 14 months makes me respect them even more.

I hope you and your child can take some time this week to say thank you in your own unique and special way.

In partnership,

Chris Gamble
Principal
Hannah G. Solomon Elementary School
Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR)
These next two weeks we will be administering the Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) to our in-person learners in grades 3-8. We will have a modified remote learning schedule in grades 3-8 during the weeks of May 3 and May 10 as a result of testing. Please check your child's Google Classroom and your email for any updates on the remote learning schedule.

News and Notes
This past Friday our 8th graders received the first round results of their CPS high school applications. Our students will have a range of great choices, including selective enrollment schools like Lane Tech, competitive application-based programs like the Von Steuben Scholars program, and neighborhood high schools with excellent, relevant programs. I wish our 8th graders the best of luck with their decisions!

Registration for students that will be new to Solomon in grades K-8 next year begins this Wednesday, May 5, between 10am-12pm and 1-3pm. Registration will continue on Wednesdays at these times through June 23, and dates for summer registration will be shared shortly. Please come to Door #1 with your required documentation; for more information on what is required for registration, please click here. We are hearing that families who applied through the online application for non-neighborhood residents should be notified by the end of the month.

The pre-k application for the 2021–22 school year is open now. There are more than 600 CPS and community-based preschool programs located throughout the city; choose the program that is best for your family. To learn more about applying for pre-k, visit chicagoearlylearning.org, call (312) 229-1690, or make an appointment with one of the city’s family resource centers.

This past week we did our shelter-in-place (tornado) drills for Pods A and B, and this week we will be doing our lockdown drills for Pods A and B on Monday and Friday. For a review of Solomon's safety procedures, please click here.

Aliens at the Gym: Six Comedic Sketches is a series of short plays written and performed by the 7th grade students at Solomon Elementary School. This performance is the culminating project for the On Air Residency, taught by Jamie Olah. Over the course of several months, students learned about comedy, creative writing, radio plays, acting and Foley artistry. Each sketch was created by a group of students who collaborated to devise the plot, characters, dialogue and sound effects for their piece. To access their project and to hear their awesomeness in action, please click here.

Please see this link for our breakfast and lunch menus through May 14. We hope to transition to hot lunches within the first two weeks of May, though, so I will be sure to share any new menus once we make that switch.

Please take a moment and review the medical requirements for 2021-2022 school year by clicking here. Now is a good time to make those appointments for summer physicals!

Construction on the Granville Ave. sidewalk will begin this week and should take approximately 2 weeks. The work is intended to replace the sidewalk between Hamlin and Avers. We've asked the construction company to avoid working at entry and dismissal times, as we will continue to use Door #5 for student entry and exit.
In-Person Learning Reminders
  • Changes in protocols (entry, dismissal, lunch, etc.) are all detailed in this letter. Please review before returning to in-person learning.

  • The health screener needs to be taken for each student every day. If you are not receiving a personalized text, you can always complete the screener at cps.edu/healthscreener, and you will need to enter your child's CPS email address and birthdate.

  • If your child is feeling sick, PLEASE keep them at home for the safety of all students and staff. Students have the option to learn from home when they are not feeling well. If a student comes to school and exhibits any COVID-19 symptoms, they will be sent to the care room and then picked up by a parent. Students who are sent home after being in the care room are required to provide a doctor's note or negative COVID test clearing them for return.

  • If you are looking to travel between now and the end of the school year, please review the district's travel guidance for families document.

  • Please review, print, sign, and return the student and parent Cougar Pledges. These behaviors will help keep our students and staff safe, and everyone contributes to our success!

Solomon Spirit Wear
I am excited to announce that we have a new partner for Solomon spirit wear this year, SquadLocker. Great new gear--t-shirts, hoodies, sweatpants, shorts, polos, face masks...you name it. Peter the Cougar never looked so good. And, you can order at any time, and it will be delivered to your door. This replaces the once-a-year order that our staff and volunteers had previously organized in the building.

Click here to see what is available now, and be the first on your block to represent Solomon in our new gear!
