Dear Solomon Family--

Parent Teacher Conference Day is coming up on Wednesday, November 18. Even though report cards will be mailed home, November 18 is still a non-attendance day for students and dedicated to virtual conferences between the hours of 11:00-2:30 and 3:15-6:00. Teachers have sent out invitations for conferences, but If you haven't yet been able to connect with a teacher or staff member to set up a conference time, you can find all staff contact information at this link.

If you would like to set up an appointment to speak with me directly, please email me at crgamble@cps.edu or call the main office at 773-534-5226 to set up an appointment on Wednesday or any other convenient time.

Please see below for important updates, including a change in schedule for some classes starting this coming Monday.

In partnership,

Chris Gamble

News and Notes
  • Starting Monday, November 16, there will be some schedule changes for Quarter 2:

Grades 3-8 (general education): The only change is that students will have a different rotation of Essentials classes

Grades K-2 (general education): Students will have a different rotation of Essentials classes and lunch time will start at 12:00 instead of 11:00.

Grades K-8 (diverse learner cluster program): Students will have their Essentials classes at different times

For the new Essentials schedule for each class, see below.

  • The reason for the schedule changes is that this gives all full-day students in the building (grades K-8) have the lunch period (12:00-12:45). This was a big piece of feedback from families earlier in the school year.

  • As it stands, we have no current information about when we can expect schools to re-open for our Pre-K and cluster program students. The current increase in Covid cases is real and impacting our community, and it is my hope that everyone stays safe, wears a mask, and practices good hygiene so that everyone can come back here soon!

  • Congratulations to our 8th grade students who will be representing our school in the annual Patriot's Pen essay content later this year, writing on the topic "What Patriotism Means to Me": Tyra C. Nathan D. Ben H., and Constantine L.

  • The Office of Diverse Learner Supports and Services would like to invite families to participate in a virtual session with Dr. Stephanie Jones, Chief of the department. There are two sessions (November 17 and November 19) where you can sign up and submit questions in advance, and you can find more information here.

  • More families have been made eligible for the Chicago Connected program, which provides free internet connections to families. Invitations have been sent via robocall, text message, and email starting yesterday, and you can also check your eligibility for the program here.

  • For information about our LSC elections, including how you can vote and who our candidates are, please click here. Parents and staff have in-person, drop off, and mail-in options, with in-person voting scheduled from 7am-7pm on November 18. Community members can also vote in-person on November 18.

  • This weekend on Squad Locker they have a 20% sale on orders over $75, using the code "EARLY20". Go to our online school store to stock up on Solomon gear!
Applications for 2021-2022 School Year
8th graders; Some high schools are still hosting virtual open houses to help you with your research. Click here for more information.

A reminder for families that live outside our attendance boundaries, currently have a student in grades K-7, and are looking to have their other child join us in kindergarten next year: You will need to complete a Go CPS application by December 11 for your child to attend Solomon. Be sure to apply with "sibling preference" so we can prioritize your application. For more information, click here.

If you are enrolled in our Pre-K program and do not live in our attendance boundaries, then admission to Solomon for kindergarten is not guaranteed. You will need to complete the Go CPS application.

Families already enrolled at Solomon in grades K-7 do not need to submit another application to return--this is only for students that will be new to Solomon in the fall of 2021.
What can you do to prepare our students for returning?
We know that re-opening plans have been delayed due to the increase of Covid cases, but we are still preparing for when we will re-open for our Pre-K and cluster program students. In preparation for when our students are back in school, there are things you can do to help keep everyone safe when we return:

Emphasize good hygiene around the house: Make the elbow your "germ catcher" when you sneeze, cover your mouth when you cough, and wash those hands for 20 seconds with soap and warm water
  • Bodily fluids increase the risk for transmission, so good hygiene helps!

Practice wearing face masks around the house
  • We know that masks are annoying, but wearing them will help reduce the risk for transmission.
  • Try social stories about masks to teach children about their importance.
Friends of Solomon School PTO Updates

  • Our school is participating in a creative fundraiser with Art to Remember that allows you to purchase keepsake products customized with your child's art. There are over 60 products and many are less than $15. These make great gifts and a percentage of every purchase goes right back to our school. The exciting part is that you can select any piece of artwork from home! You can use art from e-learning, choose a piece from earlier in the year, or create something new. Just click on this link, click the "upload" button, select a piece of artwork, search for your child's name, and start shopping. You can upload additional pieces and save them in a digital family gallery. Have fun creating and shopping!

  • And please remember to "Like" Friends of Solomon School PTO on Facebook!

Solomon Spirit Wear
I am excited to announce that we have a new partner for Solomon spirit wear this year, SquadLocker. Great new gear--t-shirts, hoodies, sweatpants, shorts, polos, face masks...you name it. Peter the Cougar never looked so good. And, you can order at any time, and it will be delivered to your door. This replaces the once-a-year order that our staff and volunteers had previously organized in the building.
