Dear Solomon Family--

I am wishing you health, both physical and mental, during this challenging time. All families should have received the emails from Chicago Public Schools earlier today about the current plans for school re-opening during the 2nd Quarter. The group of students that the district is first looking to return to buildings are our those in the pre-kindergarten program and in the cluster special education program with a significantly modified curriculum. At this point, the district has not shared any plans regarding re-opening for all other student groups.

There are many details still to resolve. Over the next few weeks, you can expect that I will communicate with our community and staff frequently to inform, and I will conduct town hall style meetings for both community and staff in the coming weeks so that we can prepare together. We will also continue making our classrooms and common areas ready for instruction in this new socially-distant environment.

Parents of students in our Pre-K and cluster programs, please be on the lookout for an "intent" form from the district asking whether you will anticipate sending your child(ren) to Solomon or not when the building does reopen. Those intent forms will be sent out by the district shortly and are asked to be completed by October 28.

I had the chance to meet with different groups of students on Friday, and while it was in another context, the message that I shared is relevant here. We are in the business of keeping students safe, and if we can't do that, then we can't do anything else. We will work tirelessly to maintain a safe space, physical, mental, and emotional, for all of our students and staff.

News and Notes
  • 5th-8th Boys and Girls Cross Country practice started this week with strict protocols that include daily health screenings, temperature checks, mandatory use of masks, and social distancing. If your child is still interested in participating in Cross Country, please return these completed student registration and consent forms as soon as possible. Students will not be able to start practicing until the 2 forms listed above are submitted and entered in our database by our Athletic Director, Mr. Martin. You can either bring the forms to Solomon or email them to Mr. Martin at cjmartin1@cps.edu. Practices with Coach Sergio are held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30 to 5:45pm on our turf field.

  • We will be having our annual Scholastic Book Fair from October 26 to November 8. It will be an online shopping opportunity to build up your book shelf for the coming months, all the while supporting literacy practices at Solomon. Stay tuned!

  • October 26-30 is Red Ribbon Week at Solomon, where we focus on making healthy choices and pledging to live drug and bully free. We will celebrate with a spirit week as well.
Friends of Solomon School PTO Updates
  • Join us for a community event at Peterson Park on Saturday, October 24, from 9am-12pm. We will be at the park that morning to help clean up the park. We will be able to supply the gloves and bags. Come out and celebrate our community in a safe and socially-distant way by cleaning up our neighborhood park!

  • Our school is participating in a creative fundraiser with Art to Remember that allows you to purchase keepsake products customized with your child's art. There are over 60 products and many are less than $15. These make great gifts and a percentage of every purchase goes right back to our school. The exciting part is that you can select any piece of artwork from home! You can use art from e-learning, choose a piece from earlier in the year, or create something new. Just click on this link, click the "upload" button, select a piece of artwork, search for your child's name, and start shopping. You can upload additional pieces and save them in a digital family gallery. Have fun creating and shopping!

  • Online shopping through Amazon's charitable giving site Amazon Smile gets you what you need, while Amazon gives back to our school. Make sure you log in to smile.amazon.com and choose Friends of Solomon School Parent Teacher Organization as your designated charity and watch the donations add up! To date, Amazon Smile has donated a total of: $106.99 to Friends of Solomon School PTO!

8th Grade High School Applications
8th graders, the high school application process is open at go.cps.edu. There is no reason to rush on the application, and the application isn't due until December 11. Take your time, do the research, and get comfortable with the variety of options.

You can always request to meet with our counselor, Mrs. Mulholland, to assist you with your application or ask any questions. She can be reached at pamulholland@cps.edu or via the Counselor's Corner on our school website.

Solomon Calendar
The most up-to-date place where you can find important events at Solomon is our school website's homepage, solomon.cps.edu. Logins for each of the virtual meetings can be found in that same calendar. Additionally, please be mindful of the following upcoming events:

October 21: High School Admissions Process for our 6th and 7th grade families, 6pm

October 24: Solomon Community Clean-up Day at Peterson Park (9-12)

November 6: No School for students (School Improvement Day, end of 1st Quarter)
Community Corner
Student meals are available from the district on a grab-and-go basis. While Solomon is not a distribution site, neighboring schools Sauganash Elementary (6040 N. Kilpatrick) and Peterson Elementary (5510 N. Christiana) are both open daily between 8:00-1:00. For more information on the CPS Grab-and-Go Meal Sites, click here.

A note from William Townsell, Acting Civilian Supervisor of the Chicago Police, Area 5, which includes our 17th District: "Starting this month, all of the 22 Police Districts will be engaging the public in preparation for the 2021 Strategic Plan that each district has to complete. In light of the ongoing pandemic, these sessions will be virtual." You can register for this virtual session here.

Solomon's new 1st grade Daisy Girl Scout troop 26058 is holding its first virtual meeting and we are looking for a few more girls to join us this year! Interested girls should register online before we meet on Saturday October 24 at 10:30am. We will continue meeting virtually on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month (when school is in session). We will re-evaluate meeting in person as the year progresses. Any girls interested in joining should reach out to a troop leader for enrollment information as soon as possible. There is a one-time registration fee of $25 and financial assistance is available. We hope you will consider joining! For more information, see here.

Chicago Industrial Arts and Design Center's (CIADC) next session of on-site, socially-distant Fall classes begins the week of October 19. Teens (ages 12 and up) can choose from Metalworking & Forging, Woodworking, Casting & Molding and Technology & Design, and student scholarships are available. For more information, click here.

Solomon Spirit Wear
I am excited to announce that we have a new partner for Solomon spirit wear this year, SquadLocker. Great new gear--t-shirts, hoodies, sweatpants, shorts, polos, face masks...you name it. Peter the Cougar never looked so good. And, you can order at any time, and it will be delivered to your door. This replaces the once-a-year order that our staff and volunteers had previously organized in the building.
